2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 djredpop (101) - Downriver, Michigan, USA - MAR 11, 2010
UPDATED: APR 4, 2010 Decent understated hops aroma, but dominated by coffee / dark chocolate scent. Nearly black w/ decent tan head. Medium-heavy bodied and very dry. Slippery mouthfeel. I thought I would try to re-rate this seeing how my own opinion of this beer seems to be out of line with the general consensus, but just way too much acidic coffee bitterness for my taste. And I LOVE coffee. And espresso. And chocolate. And stouts. I really tried to like this. Twice.

Pours near black with a little red around the edges, and a nice dark tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, and a little toffee. Flavor is very roasty, with a lot of coffee bean and bitter coffee finish. Pretty good.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling.
It pours an inky black with a large, creamy, tan head. Excellent head retention and lacing. The nose is filled with coffee as you might expect. There are also notes of earth, well roasted malt, and a bit of mineral. The taste is loaded with black coffee (think french roast). It’s certainly not one dimensional though. Nice notes of roasted malt, earth, mineral, and a nice malt sweetness help to provide balance. It reminds me of lightly sweetened coffee. The mouthfeel is medium-rich with medium-low carbonation and a long, coffee laden finish. Overall I thought this brew was very well done and I highly recommend it. Beware if you aren’t a fan of coffee though!
