Pours nice and dark with a nose full of aromas. Roasted malt smell with strong coffee taste. This is one of the best coffee stouts I’ve ever had rates up there with KBS and southern tier Javha.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TeamTrappist (785) - jericho, New York, USA - FEB 21, 2010
Bottle. Pours pitch black with a small beigje foamy head. Yep the nose is intense coffee and Anton of roasted malts. Flavor follows the nose. Big coffee flavor, ad internee roasted malts. But it feels like something is missing, at least to me. Either a sweet note, or cho plate or vanilla. Something to break up the intense and extreme bitterness. I typically love coffee stouts but only like this one.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 dimenhetfield (1663) - , Florida, USA - FEB 20, 2010
Has an incredible aroma of coffee grind, chocolate, and roasted nuts. The color is a smooth silky black with a dark brown foam head. The flavor is very smooth with a nice bitter sweet after taste.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 SuzyGreenberg (1578) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 19, 2010
12 oz. bottle; batch 9363; pours thin cola brown with eggy chocolate colored head settling slowly; chaulky aromas of choco powder, coffee beans, nuts, mild roast and creamy milk; thin texture that has an almost velvety mouthfeel; creamy coffee, chocolate; sign of the times that even at 7.5%, this comes off on the light side for a stout; drinks creamy with espresso, dry chocolate; not over the top with the coffee but rather a well rounded brew with plenty of sweetness to cover up any bitterness from the roast and/or coffee; very well done and a beer I was glad to revisit
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Angelmonster (74) - Colorado, USA - FEB 18, 2010
Pours a 2 finger mocha colored head which resembles the creme from cappuccino. Body is pitch black. Head retention and lacing are pretty good
Aroma is of rich roasted coffee beans. Smoky burnt malts are also present but really take a backseat to coffee. Hops are faint and alcohol isn’t detected.
Taste is similar to smell, big on coffee which I love. Rich, roasted, burnt malts are also present. This beer definitely went all out to produce the coffee flavors. Hops and alcohol are on the low side.
Mouthfeel is good. Head stayed through most of glass and added a nice froth. Just wish beer was a bit more full bodied. Carbonation was also slightly on the aggressive side.
Overall this was a semi sessionable beer. Very rich and full of coffee goodness. I guess the only downside to this beer was that there was nothing to balance out the strong coffee flavors. My favorite beers in the world Peche Mortel and Espresso Yeti both have some sweetness to round out the beer and make them more complex. Java stout was just slightly rough around the edges but still extremely good, wish it was available in my state
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 fidelis83 (1262) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - FEB 18, 2010
Pours black with a 1 finger, creamy mocha had that has great retention. Aroma is huge on dark roast coffee and espress, nice roast follows that up, then some dusty dried grass and some salt and mineral notes. Flavor is on rich espresso, hints of dark roast coffee, rich bittersweet chocolate, dark toasted grain, planty and grassy hops, dark caramel and maybe a hint of lacto sweetness. Palate is on the heavy side of medium bodied with a fairly light carbonation, creamy entry, slightly slick finish and a fairly sticky feel on the lips. This is really a fantastic stout all around.
