The satisfying elements of both stout and coffee come together in this full-bodied treat. A marriage of Sumatra's best with rich chocolate and roasted malt provides for a truly enlightening beer.

Pours black, with a relatively thin, moderate brown head. Head is a bit frothy, but with little in the way of retention--dissipates quickly. Aroma is absolutely dominated by coffee, with a somewhat sour character. Some chocolate malts are detectable, but they’re definitely in the background. Taste is of coffee with a mainly tart, sweet-and-sour character. Some fruitiness, too--like cherries. Not much in the way of burnt malts, almost porter-like. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin-side, but I wouldn’t say watery. Lively carbonation, but the effervescence is not overpowering. In sum, this beer is somewhat uncharacteristic of many coffee stouts because of its almost porter-like presentation, but a very fine beer nonetheless. If you’re a coffee lover who is disappointed with that coffee stouts that privilege burnt malts, then give this one a try. A grower, but I like it a lot. Bears a lot in common with the Bell’s Cherry Stout (which I love), but with a coffee kick. Another fine showing for Bell’s.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 12 ounce bottle. Appearance: pours black with a thick foamy tan head with excellent retention. Aroma: roasted coffee, burnt chocolate, cocoa. Taste: Roasted coffee and unsweetened cocoa, followed by sweet milk chocolate. Palate: medium bodied and smooth. Overall: very good roasted stout, good for anytime, especially winter.

Aroma of black coffee, oak and roasted malt. A bit one-note, but nice. Looks great - Midnight black with the slightest amount of light tan foam. Taste is strong coffee bitterness with undertones of roast, cream, oak and vanilla. Underwhelming palate. Good beer, but I could use more. A thicker palate and higher ABV would help. The coffee just overpowers everything.

355ml bottle bottled 09/11/14. Pours a near black with a thin tan head that thins to a ring. Aroma has big, smooth notes of roasted malts, coffee, nut shells, dark chocolate, and traces of caramel. Taste is balanced with lots of cold-pressed coffee, dark roasted malts, chocolate, slight dark fruits, and an espresso bitter ending. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. Clean in the mouth with a bone dry finish. Overall a really nice coffee beer. Still lots of coffee with smooth roast. Highly recommended.

12 ounce bottle from Bine & Vine, purchased 14 months ago ($3.49). "Packaged 09/11/14." POURS dark brown (almost black) with a half finger of brown foam. AROMA of rough-ground dark coffee, roasted and lightly smoky malts, roasted nuts, with some fading chocolate. FLAVOR mainly of strong coffee (creamy espresso-laden cafe au lait comes to mind), with additional notes of vanilla, creamy chocolate, and Kahlua (though this is not very sweet at all). Some lingering coffee-bitterness. A nice creamy mouthfeel. Not particularly complex but really very well executed, and that goes a long way. (1532, 1001)

Solid beer, but the coffee flavor doesn’t come through as much as I’d like in a (borderline) Imperial Coffee Stout

Pours a dark black. Has a strong chocolate, coffee, and malt aroma. A nice mixed flavor of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, caramel and a malt bitterness. A sweet but dry aftertaste.
