COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a full-bodied stout with plenty of roast flavor as well as hints of molasses and chocolate. Ridiculous amounts of black and caramel malts make this stout smooth, creamy, and utterly opaque.

Molasses and dark chocolate on the nose. Bitter dark chocolate up front. Not much sweetness to balance...dry. Muted bitterness intensifies on the finish.

Opaque, black, thin tan head with great retention and viscous lacing. Aromas of smoke, wood, dark fruit and licorice. Dark fruit sweetness accompanies the bittersweet baker’s chocolate, with notes of licorice, roasted coffee and molasses. Full body, minimal carbonation, silky smooth mouthfeel, and a lingering smokiness in the finish.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Jet black with a small dark tan head. Aromas of cacao nib, roasted coffee, prune, wood and fennel. Slightly bittersweet on the the palate but muted, not harsh at all. Medium body. Nice long dry finish that rides off into the sunset. Excellent stout.

July 31st, 2013 - The Kalamazoo Stout had long been a myth in California. Spotted here in there between trees, flitting between hands and persons, but never easy to catch, grasp or drink. But Bell’s distribution line sagged out to include our corner of the country, bringing with it all the delicious Bells Brewery drinks, and for myself, this particular treasure. My friend and I held this beer in high enough esteem that it was included alongside aged Winter Warlocks and New Belgium Folies. The stout pours thick and oily, as expected, and effuses a lovely coffee aroma, mostly roasted, but not sweet like a mocha. It’s more bitter, leading with espresso and a dryer, more continental flavor. The flavor is what really hooked itself into my memory though. I first notice a supremely foamy palate, which quickly and efficiently drapes the taste of finely roasted beans across the tongue. Lots of intensely dark chocolate here, like the essence of cacao nibs, and a deep dive of an aftertaste bringing velvety, luxurious dark chocolate. And I note here: "Gawwdamn!" The only drawback seems to be that this stout seems a little mild compared to the 2007 Winter Warlock, but that’s comparing an old churlish boxer with a fresh faced pugilist. Different styles, same sport, and each should be appreciated in their respective corners. Each is a champion, and the Kalamazoo comes that way out of the bottle.

12oz bottle, dated 05/06/13. Pours just about black with a beige head. Aroma is raisin, molasses, soy, licorice. Flavor is dark chocolate, raisin, molasses. Licorice bitterness in the finish. So much flavor at 6%. A great stout.

Light aromas dark malts, slight roast, slight coffee, toffee, coffee bean oils and chocolate. Appears black with a thin foam rim. Taste brings dark roast, dry earth, chocolate cocoa and coffee oils. Overall, for a stout, not too bad. Decent body.
