Aroma is a heavy roast, sweet chocolate, and coffee. Flavor roasted malt, sweet chocolate, coffee, and bit of caramel especially in the aftertaste. Nice balanced sweet stout. Could drink this all day. twitcher (293), framingham, Massachusetts, USA Apr 9, 2009 bottle, sampled 3/14/07.
Pours a thick, dark, flat brown with an inch+ of dark tan head. Aroma shows plenty of toasted malts, a healthy dose of booze, and some dark bittersweet notes. Flavor follows, with plenty of smooth, dark semi-sweet roasted grains and some light bitterness. Licorice notes show up in the flavor, though not overpowering or dominant. Light booze notes round out the flavor. Flavor on this on lacks some depth, but without detriment- a nice, simple-ish well brewed stout. Palate is very smooth and clean with an even finish. Elwood (676), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Apr 6, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours almost black with small red highlights. A monster of a tan head! The first aroma I get is an odd licorice and roasted malt combination. Further inspection reveals some nice coffee and caramel notes as well. Medium-low carbonation with a rich mouthfeel. A mineral taste is the first thing to strike my palate. Coffee and caramel come along as well. A bit of dryness on the palate too. There is a lingering bitterness and a long finish. The body is lighter than I was expecting, helping make the beer very drinkable. A very respectable stout from a great brewery. djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA Apr 4, 2009 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium creamy light tan head that lasts awhile that leaves behind good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a roasted malt with molasses and caramel. The taste is a rich roasted malt with chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. Easy to drink, a very good stout from Bells.
