Thick black, sandy 2 finger head had some dull grey in it, maybe I had licorice on the brain. All I get is black malt on the nose though. Lighter in body than it looks, lots of roast, balanced and sustained, tastes much deeper than only 6% HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA

Flavor is sweet malt, coffee, dark fruit and a hint of smoke. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Somewhat dry finish. Good stout. GranvilleTim (476), Granville, Illinois, USA

Can’t see light through it when held up next to a light. Brown head that leaves a nice lace as the beer goes down. Roasted malt aroma with a little sweetness. Little sweetness in the taste, little bitterness, and a slight dry finish. timmy300 (199), bloomington, Illinois, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 6, 2009 Tap at Eccentric Cafe - Pours jet black with a quickly dissapating tan, frothy head. Smells nutty, with roasted barley and malt. Tastes roasty, smoky, nutty, and a bit of sausage in the background. Not the heavy mouthfeel I like in a stout, but pretty good overall. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 6, 2009 Updated: Jul 28, 2009Must re-rate. I don’t know if I had a bad bottle last time, was too drunk, or just pissed off! Who knows? This time I must say the beer looks great. Nice chocolate head, but not that viscous pour I was hoping for. Nice coffe and chocolate aroma, and it becomes even more pungent as the beer warms. Not extremely pungent, but good enough. Nice sweet coffe and chocolate taste with a slight bittering finish. Nice roast touch that is awesome as well. Creamy texture, but on the verge of only giving this a 3 but it wouldn’t have made a huge impact on the score. Overall, nice offering from Bells, that I frigged up on rating the first time. cgarvieuk (4171), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 3, 2009 Aroma was full of chocolate, coffee and molasses. Appearance was black as night with a nice creamy head. Flavor was malty for an American brew, with chocolate, caramel and molasses, as hinted in the aroma. Palate was creamy, a nice medium bodied brew. A very good stout.
