3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour is a dark black with a large tan head. Aroma is a nice mix of toasty malts and dark chocolate. Flavor is caramel with dark chocolate with some coffee thrown in there. Everything you would want a stout to be and then some.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 oz bottle, via illinismity. Pitch black pour with a nice half inch chocolate brown head that left great lacing. Rich roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Burnt malt and bitter chocolate flavor, very deep and full. Bitter and dry finish with good length. Full bodied chewy mouthfeel with perfect carbonation. Ideal palate for a Stout. Easy to see why this is so highly regarded. Itís nice to have a regular Stout so packed with flavor. This beer has much more going on than many brewerys attempts at Imperial Stout.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Wow, this is some BLACK beer! Opaque and with an opulent brown head that sticks to the sides of the glass, this beer screams "drink me!" Smells like any other stout, chocolatey, coffeish, roasty. Oh man, this is tasty, very bitter (the way I like stouts to be), roasted chocolate with a slight coffee tinge dominates, with a bitter finish. Just the right amount of carbonation. I would definitely buy this again. And again. And again! I canít wait to try Bellís other legend, Expedition.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Very dark and totally black pour. Nice bitter roasted chocolate, coffee, malt aroma. Alot smoother and lighter then I expected from a stout. Has a definite coffee, chocolate, roasted malt flavor ti it. Bitter is one thing that I found this beer to be. A little to bitter for me while drinking and in the finish. But a good beer nontheless. One I can wait a while to try again though.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared with HogTownHarry -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a very dark brown-black with a nice size foamy light-brown head. You canít see through this puppy. The aroma, well itís just as good as a Stout can get isnít it? Roasted malt with chocolate, hops, smoke, coffee and caramel -- just awesome. The flavour is no slouch either: a big roasty caramel malt flavour with chocolate and a nice bitter aftertaste. Thick and creamy just as a great Stout should be. Spectacular, well done Bells!

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 17, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, obtained via trade with MullMan. Poured impenetrable brown-black with a thick, foamy, creamy dark brown head - oh yeah. A roasty/smoke malt medley I cannot begin to do justice to, coffee beans, dark chocolate, cream, woodiness, juniper berries, hops - mmmmmm. Taste follows the nose, quite bitter, even more juniper and tart blackberry notes, starts with some chocolate but the coffee and tartness join up with the hop bitterness to make this a decidedly long, smooth but bitter finish. Mouthfeel is extremely creamy, thick in body, slightly lively mouthfeel, and incredibly complex. Where have you been all my life? The best regular stout Iíve ever had.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma of chocolate, roast coffee. Appears black as pitch, with a small creamy brown head that dissipates. Flavor is warm, roasty, with some suprisingly smoky notes, and with bitterness that comes more from the grains than from anything else. Palate is medium thick and very smooth. Overall, this is a fantastic brew and one that benefits from a restrained sense of balance. It is even a bit more than the sum of its parts.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
12-oz. bottle, Batch #6864, bottled May 12, 2005. Pours near opaque only letting a slight amount of light to pass through this black strap molasses-like medium, with a small and bubbly frothy tan head, mostly diminishing to a floating film. Fragrant fruit (grape, apple) jumps out of the glass first and leads the way for some extremely aromatic dark coffee, espresso chocolate malt, faint smokiness of dark roasted malt, caramel notes with yeast (leather) on the nose. Dark bitter coffee and chocolate, biting like your wake-me-up espresso, oh this would make a great morning brew, modetately bitter lasting flavor with some sour leathery yeast notes. Dark and full bodied, lightly fizzy and velvety palate.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 oz bottle Pours a heavy black with a lasting creamy light brown head which produces great lacing. Has a lovely roasted chocolate and coffee aroma with nutty hints. I also got a touch of dough. A thick full bodied stout with a good amount of carbonation and a nice finish. Good aftertaste. This is a great stout with good flavors and a robust taste that lasts nicely.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2008 4/6/08 (Bought 12/2005)
I figured it was about time to drink my last bottle of the 6 pack I bought in December 2005. Wonderful aroma very similar to what I reported in í05. Amazingly thick, oily, and soft mouthfeel. Easily a 5 on the palate. I donít notice much of a bitter finish as I reported in í05. It seems to have mellowed quite a bit. Nothing over-powers anything else. Itís just an amazingly thick, soft, and roasted mouthful. One of the best beers Iíve had for sure.
Pitch black with a small brown head that disappeared fairly quickly. Nice aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, nuts(?). Wonderful flavor. Mirrors the aroma. Some coffee bitterness in the finish but itís not overdone. Very nice. Thick and oily mouthfeel. Wonderfully balanced. I had to drive a long way to go on the beer run when I got this. I wish Iíd have picked up more of this while I was there. (8/5/9/4/17)
