jeff789 (357), Pennsylvania, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours jet black with a nice tan head and leaves very nice lacing... Not hugely aromatic, smells slightly of roasted malts, a bit sweet... Roasty for days with slight hints of bitter chocolate and a very subtle hint of coffee... The initial flavor blast subsides into an airy almost light finish with a bit of lingering roastiness... Medium to full bodied... pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA Jan 6, 2009 Bottle: Dark, dark brown with a long lasting tan head. Malty and mild chocolate aroma. Sweet and malty flavors with a hint of dark chocolate bitterness and cardboard. Smooth feel and easy to drink. It’s hard not to judge it against the fine Imperial Stout - Expedition. But, if I pretend I have never tasted Expedition, I would think this is a solid stout. coyotehunter (542), , Michigan, USA Jan 5, 2009 Very good nose of coffee and chocolate..pours black with a brown head. good flavors of chocolate , roasted malt, molasses, brown sugar and hints of vanilla.
finishes somewhat sweet. Good stout andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Jan 4, 2009 12 oz bottle. pours thick with a creamy yet firm head. The aromas are complex: heavy roasted malts combined with dark espresso roast; also, thicker oatmeal like aromas hidden underneath the cacao bean. thick, also rich in flavor. brown sugar and molasses as well as baking chocolate and a smooth yet bitter coffee finish. this is a tasty ale. as it warms, the alcohol still is well hidden, but the heavier than expected carbonation is revealed. all in all, it’s a damn good stout...one i would gladly imbibe on draft. smith4498 (822), Miami, Florida, USA Jan 4, 2009 Pours black with light brown head. Burnt malt aroma. Burnt malt flavor with a hint of coffee. Full body with mild carbonation and a moderately bitter finish. Very nice. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jan 4, 2009 Bottle courtesy of masonjer poured into a Bells snifter.
Pours dark, dark brown, almost black with very little light showing through even the edges. The head is two fingers and tan and lingers as a cap for a while leaving some sporadic lacing.
Wow, does this smell great - big roasted malt backbone with hints of coffee and dark, sweet chocolate. It all melds together so well as a single wonderful aroma.
The taste didn’t quite live up to the aroma, with the sweet chocolate and dark roasted malts still dominating. The main reason it falls slightly short is the bitterness of the coffee which is a little overpowering in the finish.
The mouthfeel is as good as I have ever experienced for a stout of this style. It’s so decadent and smooth with a perfect amount of carbonation that accentuates the taste. Beautiful feel on the palate.
Bells knows how to knock their stouts out of the park and this is no exception. This is a fantastic stout and one of the best of its style. Highly recommended. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Jan 4, 2009 Bottle. Roasty coffee/chocolate aroma. Black body, small light brown head. Flavor has roastiness, sweetness, coffee, bitter chocolate, and all cooperates together in a tasty blend. Very rich. Wonderful. GodOfThunder (855), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 2, 2009 Pours an opaque dark chocolate color from the bottle with a beautiful thick chocolate milk head. It has a slight chocolate milk smell, combined with the roasted malts. Neither smell is overpowering. A little sweet, a little roast.
The taste has just a little sweetness. The roasted malts come through, but they arent overpowering. Like many Bells beers, it has great balance. Not too much of a single flavor.
It is a great balanced stout with just enough of everything. Very drinkable for a stout.
