TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2008 Bottle - Seems like this one was a little lost on me compared to other raters. Pleasant stout aroma with coffee and coco malts. The palate was an even keel and a blend that really didn’t jump out as really that outstanding. Had this in a massive tasting so will need to try again soon to get a better perspective. darn1207 (529), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 21, 2008 12oz bottle. I have had this a few times - first chance to rate. black pour with long lasting creamy head. aroma of sweet roasted malt, coffee, molasses and caramel. a bitter-sweet chocolate and coffee taste. also light licorice. creamy medium body. dry roasty bitter finish. relatively awesome. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 21, 2008 (Sampled 7-6-08 from 12 oz. bottle poured into shaker)- poured blacker than midnight during a heavy thunderstorm, very attractive tan head over one finger high formed and last for quite awhile, light carbonation. Aroma of bakers chocolate, heavily roasted malts, and hard coffee. Hits the mouth with double semi trailer wide body, the malt hits the tongue hard and just sits there, moderately sticky in feel, finish has a very nice taste of molasses and toffee. As heavy as this brew is, it makes it all in balance- not very easy to accomplish! I may be one of Bells harshest critics, but even I have to say this is one damn good beer! RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottle thanks to Alobar. Pours nearly black with a dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, licorice, cocoa, and dark fruits. Taste is very similar with a great velvkety mouth feel. Medium carbonation. Very tasty. jfm (1694), Holbæk, Denmark Jul 15, 2008 Bottle. Pleasant roasted malt aroma with a hint of chocolate and coffee. Black body with a small brown head. Sweet pleasant roasted body with roasted or almost burned caramel and chocolate notes with a hint of coffee. Sweet chocolate palate. Very nice. Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jul 12, 2008 Updated: Aug 5, 200812 oz bottle from John’s Grocery.
Aroma: Full of chocolate malts and roasty. VERY roasty.
Appearance: Very dark and black. Dark tan head, not very big, but pretty bubbly and dissipates quickly leaving a creamy and lacy swirl. Beautiful lace, actually.
Flavor: Chocolate, mocha, roasty aftertaste. Hint of black licorice, burnt malt and toffee.
Palate: Medium body, great roast flavor. Carbonation brings the bitter flavor out well towards the end. Dry finish and silky smooth.
Overall: Awesome stout! Love to have more. Smooth and not overpowering. Complex flavors and great dry, bitter finish. Very balanced and delicious. ForeverNovice (7), , Minnesota, USA does not count Jul 11, 2008 I came in with high expectation, and found them slightly dashed. Excellently thick viscosity, deep, dark color and a nice head that dissolves after a couple minutes. I have no complaints about the taste, but I didn’t experience any of the complexity other tasters here have described. All I got was a pleasantly bitter, creamy, beer flavor. Quite good, but there are better options. CheersBabe (62), USA Jul 9, 2008 Brewers licorice anyone? This beer is as dark as used motor oil and drinks as thick. For fans of dark stouts (not that Guinness water shit) this is a beer that you should try. Awesome beer.
