riversideAK (2650), Shoreline, Washington, USA Jan 16, 2008 Bottle from hopdog. More or less black. No head. Chocolate, licorice, and a minute amount of sweet roast in the aroma. Sweet licorice blends with light roast and a little chocolate. Also, some dark fruit. Dates, plums, black cherries. Rather fruity actually. As it warms, caramel malts and roast blend to create a nice smooth balance. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty nice. ketchepillar (476), Viña del Mar, Chile Jan 15, 2008 Updated: Mar 25, 2008Bottle, batch 8205 on 1/15/08. Hoppier than I remember. Licorice and wood come through. Mouthfeel is quite thick, a bit too sticky though. 7/4/7/3/15-3.7
Bottle, batch 8205 on 3/25/08. Aroma is good but kinda of boring and tending towards sweet stout land. Flavor is full and roasted, with a licorice finish. Still a decent amount of hops mixing intriguingly w/ the bitterness from the dark malt. This doesn’t blow me away, but I still love it. 7/4/8/4/16-3.9 vadavid (131), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA Jan 15, 2008 Pours a dense, opaque molasses color. Brown head quickly dissipates, leaving a persistent ring. Aroma is of dark chocolate and coffee. The taste is a sweet expresso flavor, with chocolate. Some roasted bitterness. Mouthfeel is thick, slightly stick, with some tingling carbonation. A very nice sweet stout. jzzbassman (838), New Albany, Mississippi, USA Jan 12, 2008 Bottle courtesy of styles. I sure wish I had this one readily available as it just seems like a quintessential stout. Coffee and chocolate present in the aroma. Rich and creamy malt flavor with just enough carbonation. Just lovely. TheEpeeist (1430), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 12, 2008 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Nose of coffee, figs and licorice. Medium body with a tang. Taste is coffee, a touch of cocoa, smoke and licorice. Finishes with dry burnt sugar. scoobysnak (249), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Jan 11, 2008 A good black beer with a small brown head that dissapates really quickly in to a small film. The smell is mostly of roasted malt. I didn’t notice any of the licorice that was noted. The taste also lacked any licorice which isn’t a big deal to me. I like the smokiness of the brew and the roasted malts give it a fine dark earthy flavor. Another good one from Bells. Hank1980 (734), Athens, Georgia, USA Jan 11, 2008 Pours is dark with a light brown head that vanishes pretty quickly, leaving decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is of roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is of licorice and bitter chocolate with some coffee. Roasted malt sweetness and smoke are also present, more so in the finish. The fact that licorice was included on the label almost scared me off, since I hate licorice, but the licorice here was very subtle and worked well. Some metalic notes are also faintly present. Mouthfeel is very creamy with some light carbonation. natejgood (189), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 11, 2008 Pours pretty dark with a mocha colored head. The aroma is of roasted malt with a hint of molasses and maybe some coffee. The flavor is at first a little bitter with a strong coffee taste. It then sweetens up a little bit with some roasted flavor in the background. A very good flavor combination in this beer. This is a pretty solid beer. It has a lot of good flavor without being too heavy.
