AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Jan 10, 2008 12 oz. bottle, batch # 6781. Black with a light brown head. A nice lacing is left behind on the shaker glass. Medium strong smell of malted chocolate and roasted grains. Medium heavy body with a smooth texture. Hearty flavor of blackened malts and sweetened coffee. Has a slight bitterness to finish from the blackened malts.
A great everyday drinker. July 2005 gearbike (413), West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA Jan 4, 2008 Dark brown medium head. Just perfect. Nutty with a medium body. Very smooth. Just tasty very stout like but still went well with a good tuna steak. MegannageM (8), USA does not count Jan 3, 2008 I have to have this beer as my after work treat. Its heavenly. Thick oily black with a coffee colored head. The aroma is of coffee and heavy malt. The taste is bittersweet bakers chocolate and espresso. Loads of roasty flavors slightly creamy and full bodied. This is a marvelous stout. jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Dec 31, 2007 12oz bottle from ealdent. Pours a solid, opaque black with a very thick, brown, pillowy head that lasts forever and leaves lots of lace on the glass. The aroma is sweet and malty but with a thick layer of roasted grains and coffee. There are also hints of molasses and caramel in the nose. The flavor starts rich and bittersweet with lots of chocolate with suggestions of Espresso Cubano. The middle of the tongue picks up some milky sweetness in the malts, along with more coffee and chocolate. The finish is dry and extremely roasty and has a firm level of earthy hop bitterness. The aftertaste tastes like a mixture of earthy hops and espresso. The mouthfeel has a subtle tickle of carbon dioxide on the tip and middle of the tongue, and lends a very light and creamy texture to an otherwise full-bodied brew. Overall, a very good stout. doubleo (1096), San Diego, California, USA Dec 31, 2007 Pours a dark brown color with a thin, frothy brown head. Smells malty and toasty a little metallic though as well.
Tastes of lots of dark and toasty malts. A bit of chocolate. Surprisingly thin for a stout but its good. Nice carbonation. Coats the mouth a bit. Very drinkable for a stout. ElGaucho56 (386), USA Dec 30, 2007 Finally got a few down in FL so popped one open tonight. Pours about as dark as beer can get with only faint chocolate brown highlights, the head a thin but rich espresso film with spotty lacing. Nose is massive roastiness, rich chocolate with tart yeast characters, also faintly dusty and with a surprising amount of alcohol considering it’s only 6%. Licorice hits you right up front and seems almost overwhelming on first sip, but as you keep going you realize how well integrated it is into the body of the beer. The beer is quite lively on the palate, as the licorice brings initial bitterness that is quickly melded to notes of coffee, bark, drying out to a lingering smoky aftertaste where wintergreen hop character appears. Not a simple beer by any means, made even better by the fact that it’s bottle conditioned. Very nice. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Dec 29, 2007 Updated: Mar 1, 2008bottle. Seriously, every time I have another Bells beer, I think - this is one of the best breweries in the country, if not the world. They just do not disappoint.... This stout is another wonderful stout from Bells... they have the best stouts. Nice dark black color with a thick tan head. Aromas of chocolate, tons of roasted malts and a thin layer of coffee. Nice and smooth over the tongue with a medium and low carbonated body. Wonderfully malty on the finish and it leaves you wanting more. Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA Dec 29, 2007 Very very good beer. I wish it was more widely available. Impossible to find in Texas. Not too pricey for the quality either
