oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Dec 14, 2007 typical looking stout- Got a good thick two finger head in a Duvel glass. Nose- some anise, bakers chocolate. Taste- very rich, and good balance of dry and chocolate/molasses sweetness. Great body and nice hoppiness on the finish. Drinks bigger than it really is. A lot of impy stouts probably wish they had the richness and flavour profile of this brew. One of the best non impy stouts I’ve had. great work! bleeng (587), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Dec 14, 2007 12 oz bottle thanks Pantanap. A bit cold coming out of the fridge. Poured black, no head. Nose of Dogfish Head Raison d’etre. Body is thick while cold. I’ll let this sit and come back to it. A bit overcarbonated. Almost too sweet but bitter on the back end. A little chocolate, raisins, licorice. One is enough. fredjaz (108), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Dec 10, 2007 Says its brewed with licorice, thats no lie. It is the dominant flavor, especially noticeable in the dry roasty finish. A different kind of stout but pretty enjoyable nonetheless. corby112 (679), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 9, 2007 Pours a dark brown/black with a thin coffee colored head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and licorice. Roasted malt flavor with taste of chocolate, coffee, licorice, and dark fruit. Nice bitter dry finish with strong chocolate, roasted coffee and icorice aftertaste. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 6, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours a viscous oily black with a nice choloate head, half find, that’s cream and quickly disapating. Nose of roast and chocolate, dark fruits, plum and raisin. Good roasted taste with a carmel sweetness, chocolate notes leading into a good, solid hop bitterness, that’s mellowed with some creamy fruit notes at the end. A good bitter chocolate after with a touch of coffee. Very good stout, highly drinkable and readily available. This could turn into a winter staple "session" beer. drseamus (103), Troy, New York, USA Dec 4, 2007 A: Just like a stout should look. Dark body with a thick mocha colored head.
S: Dark roasty chocolate with a pronounced sweetness. Some dark fruits are present but as usual, I can’t figure out exactly which ones they are.
T: This isn’t as sweet as a sweet stout usually is. There is a bit of roastiness and a great amount of chocolate. There is a bit of the licorice, but the balance is great.
M: On the heavier side of medium bodied; or the lighter side of heavy bodied.
D: Not a bad stout at all. Too bad Bell’s isn’t available around here.
keithw (15), USA Dec 3, 2007 12oz Bottle. Tasty stout with roasted coffee, chocolate and licorice undertones.Tons of flavor. Excellent as a "dessert beer," and I find it much more drinkable than their Expedition Stout. My favorite from Bells, which is a fine brewery. jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA Dec 1, 2007 Dark black pour with thick tan head. Creamy mouthfeel with roasted malt and chocolate. Dry aftertaste. Another good beer from a great brewery.
