mvcramer (229), Arlington, Massachusetts, USA Nov 13, 2007 Remember back in college when you tried to switch from Bud Light to Guinness to show how sophisticated you were? And you really didn’t like the taste of Guinness because it was so different from your usual swill that you drank? Well this tastes like you wanted that Guinness to taste... it’s simply amazing.
Pours an insanely deep brown (almost black?) color - totally opaque - with an unbelievably creamy tan head. It’s stunning, really. The aroma is of coffee notes and roasted malt. Again - stunning. The aroma is neither overdone nor overpowering - it’s balanced perfectly. And it complements the beautiful flavor that this brew provides. A stout that brings your palate to life with perfect roasted malt flavors on the front of the palate and finishes with an exceptional blend of chocolate and coffee bitterness. I’ll say it again - it’s stunning.
One of my favorites of all time, and I’m not a die-hard stout drinker. I have an Expedition Stout in my refrigerator and I can’t wait to see what Bells has done with that one. Theis (3617), Denmark Nov 13, 2007 Bottle (Bager) at ØLklubben. Black brown head. Burned, coffee, nutty, chokolate, candy. Thin body - a bit disapointing !!! wamoore84 (20), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 10, 2007 Updated: Nov 16, 200712 oz Bottle. Aroma smells like roasted malt and coffee. Pitch black with a creamy dark tan head. Coffee was the first thing that came to my head when drinking it and a little bit of chocolate. Isn’t very thick and is really smooth on the palate. tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Nov 9, 2007 Bottle. Batch 8178. Aroma of roasted malt, rich molasses, charred wood and a hint of bitter espresso. Looks fantastic. Pitch black with a nice creamy khaki head. Excellent head retention with good lacing. Flavor is very dry. Roasted malt, liquorice and espresso. A nice hoppy backbone to balance out the malts. By far from thin on the palate, but I like my stouts a little thicker. A good offering nonetheless. bager (2121), Copenhagen N, Denmark Nov 9, 2007 Bottle. Pours pitch black with a small brown head. Very well balanced with notes of chocolate, coffee, dried fruit and hops. crushinat0r (227), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 9, 2007 Dark, black, thick. Consistent dark beige lacing head. Smells of roasted coffee beans. Tastes of chocolate and coffee, very smooth and very nice. Great body and taste. mistersinalin (367), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Nov 8, 2007 This stout is really steering me into more stouts. There is a very rich malty carpet lays smoothly over the tongue. I would take one of these anytime October-March tagz (334), USA Nov 8, 2007 Updated: May 1, 2008bottle. black oil with thin brown head. nice coffee/espresso aroma. taste brings in a roasted bitter hop. nice moderately thick body. sharp carbonation on the back end. slight acidic quality on the finish. hoppier than other stouts i’ve tried, the acidic element detracted a bit. very nice aroma, and the bitter was well balanced but in general not my kind of stout. worth sampling.
i’ve since had this one draft. nicely rounded. hops didn’t seem to dominate as much as it did in the bottle. i bumped up the flavor and impression by a few.
