phaleslu (423), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Aug 18, 2009 12 oz. bottle at Fries Cafe in Cincinnati. Pours almost black with lumpy brown head that thins quickly. Aroma is roast, coffee, a bit of chocolate, syrup, molasses. Flavor is very smoky, with roast coffee, syrup, sugar, malt. Complex but slightly overwhelmed by the smokiness. Medium body and smooth on the palate, both sweet and a little bitter. Sweet coffee aftertaste. Very unique stout. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Aug 14, 2009 Bottled. Aroma has roast, rye, coffee, some dried fruits. Excellent! Black coloured with a beige head. The taste is slightly bitter, has some sweetness, coffee, roast, rye, dried fruits and some black currant. Medium bodied. Fine beer. caesar (3020), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands Aug 14, 2009 Bottled. Dark color, medium brownish head. Aroma of roasted malt, bit of rye, plums, dried fruit, slight hint of vanilla, chocolat. Taste of rye and roasted malts, and is not as complex as the aroma. Very good beer, a bit overrated perhaps, but for the style it deserves its rating. grebs (69), Ohio, USA Aug 10, 2009 Extremely complex nose but the flavor does not quite live up. Nevertheless an excellent flavor. Missing the licorice but the rest of the chocolate and coffee flavors carries it through. Body not completely full as you would expect. Hoppiness quite pronounced for style and not out of place at all. The only thing keeping this from being truly excellent is the palate. Don’t get me wrong though, this beer is still highly recommended. thirdeye11 (403), Texas, USA Aug 9, 2009 (12oz bottle) Pours black with tan bubbles carbonating the top 1". Great lacing. Nose is extremely complex, oats, sweet syrup. Taste is beet sugar, coffee, dark chocolate and also quite complex. Nicely carbonated, smoky dry finish with some lingering coffee as well. Quite good. Bov (5403), Bienne, Switzerland Aug 9, 2009 from crackedkettle.com - almost opaque black colour with a firm persistent dark beige foam; nice lace leaved on the side of the glass; the aroma is charming and robust showing notes of licorice along with roasted malts and dark chocolate; fair hop presence too; respectable malt body, creamy mouthfeel and with a fair and subtle carbonation; solidly bitter, quite dry and with a long hoppy finish with more roasted chocolate and licorice - absolutely wonderful beer suchen (81), , Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2009 Bottle on 08/08/09. Pours a deep opaque black with a small tannish head which quickly dissipated. Aroma is caramel and chocolate with a sort of milk stout-ish sweetness. Flavors are what I think a great pint of Guinness should taste like. Deeply roasted and dry without being too heavy. The finish is distinctly bitter, with probable contribution by the strongly roasted/burnt malts. A nice solid offering that I’ve been wanting to try for a good while.
