lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 10, 2007 Thank you to DrBayern for this bottle Pours basically opaque black with a sticky staying big tan head. Smell is big and roasty at first, with some dryness about it. As it opened up I didn’t enjoy the smell quite as much. Tastes of dry, unsweetened roastiness but with a tart soy flavor creeping up more and more as I drank it. Creamy, nice body and mouthfeel with good a carbonation level, but I get the roast & "soy" flavor more than coffee and chocolate. Still not bad, but just had a component I’m not crazy about. dmtroyer (409), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2007 12oz. Definitely opaque, frothy orange head that reveals some decent carbonation you can’t see otherwise. Non-descript roasted goodness on the nose, the first sip is definitely exciting which is what is required for a rating above 4 for me. Great coffee and raisin in the body, with the smallest hint of liquorice reminds me ever so slightly of a sambuca shot with a coffee bean chaser. Great, full, creamy mouthfeel that makes this very approachable and drinkable but still a better than average, very tasty brew. Drjohnrock (95), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 8, 2007 Sampler from bottle at Clifton Beer Fest at Fries Cafe. Yes, the color is "utterly opaque" with a rich malt aroma, good complex flavor with coffee, molasses, chocolate, something that reminds me of meats cooking on a charcoal grill, and God knows what else shifting around and flowing across the taste buds. Not the heavist body you’ll ever find in a stout but it all hangs together very well. Very fine brew. Marsiblursi (1631), Göteborg, Sweden Oct 6, 2007 (Bottle, thanks Ughsmash, olso2116 and Guerde) Pours opaque black with medium brown head. Heavy roasted to burned and light smoky aroma with dark roasted coffee beans and vanilla ice cream. Undertones of brown sugar/molasses, dark chocolate, cheese, gravel, oil, sulphur and black berries. Also some hints of hops. Rather complex nose. Well roasted flavour with tones of spicy coffee, dark caramel, both milk and dark chocolate and hints of liquorice and dark berries. Good medium afterbitterness of both hops and roast. Smooth, round, velvety, and full mouthfeel with a soft carbonation. A tiny bit oily. Medium to full bodied. A fantastic stout. fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Oct 5, 2007 Has virtually no aroma. Looks the way a stout should look. Has a dark roasted toast and adds nothing special as far as other great stouts go. Overall just an average stout. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Oct 5, 2007 Updated: May 27, 2008What a fantastic beer here. Uber roast complex of chocolate, oats, and cupcakes, but surprisingly zero coffee. Very black, very full of character, almost chalky with complexity. Another fantastic brew by the Bells masters. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 30, 2007 12 oz. Opaque with a large creamy and lasting head that leaves behind a thick brown sugar frosting all over the glass. Aroma of cocoa, chicory coffee, and charred wood. Flavors of cocoa, coffee, char, prickly spices, and earthy metallic herbs. Palate is medium-heavy and creamy, with some hop-carbonation tingle. pantanap (1322), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 29, 2007 bottle.....aroma: nothing terribly surprising here. full of roast and tons of chocolate....apperance: semi-thin dark brown almost black pour with one inch light brown head that dissipated quickly....taste: more of that roast, sweet malt, and chocolate thing going. excellent mouthfeel. good texture and somewhat creamy. goes down easy and is very satisfying at that.
