| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 19, 2004 A thick creamy brown head tops this deep brown almost black beer. Thick aromas of coffee, burnt malt, alcohol, and chocolate waft from my glass. Aaah, a thick creamy body that is quite satisfying and hits the spot after the weak porter that I just had. Finishes with an astringent roast malt character. The beer is so creamy that it balances the roast character, in the front and middle of this beer, quite well. Perhaps a hint of diacetyl, but it is barely perceptible. Not really sweet, despite the ample body. After a bit of time I can detect some buttery diacetyl in the aroma, perhaps a bit distracting, but not all that bad.
This beer would be something else if the diacetyl was cleaned up a bit. Having said that, if you don't mind a bit of diacetyl, this would be a really good beer for you. KAggie97 (2485), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 21, 2006 Bottle. Pours a blacker-than-Darth-Vader’s-heart black (well, his heart in "A New Hope," anyway) Smells like coffee with chocolate and coffee. Also smells like coffee and hints of coffee, with more coffee. Flavor is roasted malt with a chocolate finish; coffee throughout. A coffee film texture rolls along the tongue. An almost perfect stout. I will DEFINITELY pick up a sixer (at least) next time I’m in Kansas City. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

Chocolate, figs, and french roast flavor. very light palate. A desirable beer that feels like a porter but looks and tastes like a perfectly made stout. Figs or dates in the finish. dkachur (2441), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2004 Pivo - my love brought from Dayton this wonderful suitcase full with amazing beers home - good work honey :-) Pitch black brew, little layer of a head. Malty moccha nose - toasted. Head leaves nice laces. Roasted coffeebeans flavors. Vinegar-like in the beginning, in the middle smooth - lasts long with an iron/metallic finish. | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 20, 2002 Beautiful pour. Deep black with dark tan head that looks almost sandy, but feels so creamy. It’s a roll call of dark malt flavors and aromas: caramel and chocolate being dominate, but with an undercurrent and finish of burnt bitterness. Low to no coffee, though. Incredible stout.
