This is a full-bodied stout with plenty of roast flavor as well as hints of molasses and chocolate. Ridiculous amounts of black and caramel malts make this stout smooth, creamy, and utterly opaque.

Bottle @ home. Opaque pitch black color, full sized beige head that lasts for a long time and leaves fair to good lacing. Aroma is malts, moderately roasty, lightly molasses. Taste malts, dark malts, slightly liquorice, some chocolate hints, softly bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, velvety texture, soft carbonation. Nice, but not nearly as good as I had hoped it would be.

04/02/15 bottle. Pours black with a half finger, tan head that thins to a thick film. Aroma has deep notes of roasted malts, and dark chocolate. Taste is on the bitter side. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, toffee, and a touch of licorice at the end. Medium-full body with a low-medium carbonation. Clean in the mouth with a bone dry finish. Overall very nice and drinkable. Dark chocolate and roasted malts mixed with caramel, toffee, and hints of licorice.

Bottle at tasting. Aroma of liquorice and sweet chocolate. Simple taste of drop, mild salt and gritty coffee. Just solid, again very overrated, like all Bell’s.

Pours dark opaque brown with a creamy cigar head that sticks around well after the beer is poured. Nose is loaded with roasty chocolate, licorice and even coffee. First drink was crazy bitter, maybe it was too cold, or maybe just the first roasty stout of the season. As it warms the mouthfeel opens up and balances the bitterness better. Solid, although not a 100 point beer.

From a 12 ounce bottle. Pours black. Absolutely no opacity when held to a light. Lazy carbonation with minimal head. Chocolate coffee nose. Wonderful complex flavor. Toffee, hint of caramel. Bitter aftertaste that lingers. Not something to drink a case of, but a warm welcome after I chose some less fabulous beers.
