EHopper (90), Minnesota, USA Apr 27, 2008 Help this one up to a spot light. Dark carmel color to one quarter inch, giving way to inky darkness. Actual frown head. Smell of my grandma’s dark brown molasses bread and black licorice. Very smooth and creamy with a flavor that is lighter than expected, without licorice but with the coffee, molasses and chocolate one would expect. A slightly watery finish, does not really detract, if anything gets you ready for another slip. Very drinkable. Maybe a good one to serve to those who don’t "like dark beer."
The_Captain (251), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 22, 2008 Bottle - Seems like this one was a little lost on me compared to other raters. Pleasant stout aroma with coffee and coco malts. The palate was an even keel and a blend that really didn’t jump out as really that outstanding. Had this in a massive tasting so will need to try again soon to get a better perspective. darn1207 (197), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 21, 2008 12oz bottle. I have had this a few times - first chance to rate. black pour with long lasting creamy head. aroma of sweet roasted malt, coffee, molasses and caramel. a bitter-sweet chocolate and coffee taste. also light licorice. creamy medium body. dry roasty bitter finish. relatively awesome. mmm///beer (470), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 21, 2008 (Sampled 7-6-08 from 12 oz. bottle poured into shaker)- poured blacker than midnight during a heavy thunderstorm, very attractive tan head over one finger high formed and last for quite awhile, light carbonation. Aroma of bakers chocolate, heavily roasted malts, and hard coffee. Hits the mouth with double semi trailer wide body, the malt hits the tongue hard and just sits there, moderately sticky in feel, finish has a very nice taste of molasses and toffee. As heavy as this brew is, it makes it all in balance- not very easy to accomplish! I may be one of Bells harshest critics, but even I have to say this is one damn good beer! RomanW70 (280), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottle thanks to Alobar. Pours nearly black with a dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, licorice, cocoa, and dark fruits. Taste is very similar with a great velvkety mouth feel. Medium carbonation. Very tasty. jfm (1560), Holbæk, Denmark Jul 15, 2008 Bottle. Pleasant roasted malt aroma with a hint of chocolate and coffee. Black body with a small brown head. Sweet pleasant roasted body with roasted or almost burned caramel and chocolate notes with a hint of coffee. Sweet chocolate palate. Very nice.
