Baltic Porter aged in Jamaican Rum barrels

Draft sample at FoBAB 2013 pours cola brown. Nose all rum and medicinal. Tastes like rubbing alcohol. Wow, didnít like this one. None of the underlying flavors of a porter to balance out the alcohol.

Draft, Roll out the Barrel Party at the Eccentric Cafe. Deep toffee brown body, thin to medium cream head with lacing. Spicy, butterscotchy rum nose; sharp and boozy. Body dominated by spiced rum with bready, caramely sweetness, brown sugar, and hints of grape. Harsh and cloying, unfortunately.

HonkeyBra (3108) - Lemont, Illinois, USA - NOV 18, 2013
Sampled at FoBAB2013. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of booze, rum, sugar, mild coconut and chocolate notes. Flavor is mostly entirely sweet rum notes, burnt sugar, coconut, and booze. The rum barrel is overpowering. If thatís your thing, so be it. Itís not my thing.

Draft sample at FOBAB 2013. Pours a bright amber-brown with no head. My main note is RUM! Yeah, thatís not exactly subtle here. It overpowers everything. Some dark fruits, some barrel, some sweetness, but Iíd be foolish to try to give other tasting notes here. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a hot, coating mouthfeel. If you like rum, you might like this. If not, youíll hate it. I fall somewhere in the middle. Disappointed and not going to try it again. But itís not CIB-level bad.

Tap at fobab 13. Poured a dark brown with a beige head. Aroma was chemicals and lots o rum with mild roast. Flavor was astringent and loads of rum. No sign of a Baltic Porter underneath either. Really glad I didnít buy a 750 of this.

Draft at FoBAB. Pours brown in color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have rum, raisins, medicinal notes, solvent, no real Baltic Porter character to speak of, ample sweetness from the rum. This was not very enjoyable, in fact, it was one of my least favorite beers at FoBAB this year.

VEry strong rum aspect to this one, it isnít harsh but it really does an overtake of the flavor profile.

   AROMA 9/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 11/20
Cbuk1013 (243) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - OCT 17, 2013
If you like rum, youíll love this beer. The rum over-powers the smell and taste of the porter. You do get a hint of raisin though

bartlebier (1162) - Belchum im Breisgau, GERMANY - OCT 9, 2013
Tap sampler, Bellís Eccentric Cafť, 31/viii/13. The sheer nose of a sample of this immediately screams out what you are in for: rum & raisins, raisins soaked in rum as in grandmaís RŲmertopf. Extra vanilla, oak and more rum fumes in the taste: making this a tasty enough raisin rum with extra body - but a flawed baltic porter that would need more time to settle into even becoming a beer (give it a few years?).

   AROMA 2/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 1/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 1/20
tectactoe (1167) - Michigan, USA - OCT 6, 2013
UPDATED: APR 8, 2014 Tap: Super dark brown, nearly black with a light tan head that survives as a long lasting film and chunky collar. Aroma is heavy, heavy alcohol. Solvent, isopropyl... way, way too heavy on the rum. Some chocolate in the back... maybe. But the aroma is very harsh and mostly just straight solvent. The taste isnít much better... at all. Huge rum flavor, like literally taking a shot of rum. Mild rubbing alcohol and solvent notes again. Some very mild coconut and back-end sticky toffee are there, once you get past the barrel aging effects... But seriously, the rum is way too heavy for this to be enjoyable. Couldnít finish this one, just far too harsh and not drinkable in any sense of the word. Not much of a Baltic Porter.
