Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while light hopping lend citrus & herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell’s house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect with meals or purely on its own.

Bottle picked up at GBBF 2014. Pours a pale straw gold with a white head. Malty, white bread, lemon aroma. Light body, medium to full carbonation. Light sponge cake, lemon, light grass, light wood, a little honey and a hint of metal. Fairly pleasant.

Bottle split at JF’s, cheers Jim, 20/08/14. Lightly hazed golden orange with moderate off white spotting. Nose is citric peel, light vegetal notes, citric dankened straw, lemon rind. Taste comprises citric sherbet, lemon rind, hay, floral notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonaiton, citric sherbets in the close. Pretty low end ’Linner, had expected more from Bells, hardly detected any acidity in this one, no crisp refreshing close. Drinkable but ulimtately a miss!

pours hazy extra pale yellow with a decent white cap, shy retention and lacing. lemons and limes, cheezy lactos, wheat acidity - never too husky, sourdough bread, lightly sweet grains, pepper, bitter herbs, hint of cardboard, sulfur and minerals. moderately low carbonation, light body - barely watery, gently tart, almost astringent and dry grassy-herbal-limey finish. not overly complex but very effective lime-oriented and cheezy berliner.

Poured from a bottle. Slightly hazy straw with white fizzy head; active carbonation throughout. Aroma is grainy and funky. Taste is grain with a nice subtle tartness. Light bodied with crisp carbonation. Pretty refreshing actually.

Tap at McCoy’s in pint. Slightly cloudy yellow. Small white head. Yeast and citrus aroma. Funky taste with some citrus and some sweet. Nice full mouthfeel. It’s ok. Will move you down the lake, but not super fast.

Bottle pour. Very pale in color, with lively carbonation. No discernible aroma. Slight citric tang. Very easy drinking, definitely not a challenging beer. Would be a good gateway to the Berliner Weiss style although the overall feel is light wheat beer. Sessionable, would pair well with meat dishes or casseroles to cut through the richness. Stands alone as a decent weiss.

(bottle - 12 oz) Lightly cloudy pale gold with a fluffy white head. Very light citrus aroma. Can definitely get some wheat and some light lemon notes. Dry wheat at the start with some light citrus near the middle. Dry finish. No tartness at all. Disappointed in that. Pretty much a light wheat ale.

Bottle. Pours yellow gold with a white head. Aroma is wet cheerios, spent yeast, flavor is wheat and tart, green grape skins. Slightly watery. Slight corriander bitter in the finish. Easy to drink, not overly tart, but simple and not exceptional.
