2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle to glass mug. Pours a crisp yellow with a quickly dissipating white head. Once again, Westy’s strikes with a 2yr old case of a 4% beer. Anyway, all I got out of this one was really, really tart sour flavor and lightness. Maybe I would revisit, but I’m not a huge Weisse fan.

Berliner Weisse has enjoyed the kind of resurgence enjoyed by Gose, Flanders Red, and other once lesser-known old-world beer styles, and it’s seen some eclectic interpretations. Bell’s Oarsman certainly makes its own place in that field. It’s both well-done and unusual. It definitely looks pretty. Pale gold color. Tight, uniform head with perfectly white bubbles. Effervescent and cloudy. Lacing on the glass. Grainy aromas with methane, light citrus, and vinegar. The taste drifts more toward malty sweet than tart and acetic. Corn and white bread flavors. There is some citrus and vinegar; lingering sourness. The feel is lively, but doesn’t seem as crisp with the muted sourness. At 4%, a person could go through quite a bit of this, especially if they’re not into mouth-puckering sourness.
