Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while light hopping lend citrus & herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell’s house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect with meals or purely on its own.

Ordered listed as a saison. Haha. I knew better upon the first sip. Hazy straw color with a thin head. Aroma of wheat and lemons. Flavor followed, tartness a little underdone. Flavor a tad weak, watery. Mouthful felt better than the flavor depth. Meh. Better choices out there. No character.

Bottled 11/30/15. Pours light yellow, pretty effervescent, small white head. Sort of opaque. Aroma is apple juice, slightly tart funk, citrus zest. Flavor is actually very mild. Expected a lot more sourness, but no, it’s only slightly tart, sort of saison-like, apple, lemon, not too acidic at all. It feels like a good summer lake-beer.

Bright golden with foamy white head. Tart citrus aroma. Flavor of lemon, grass, with little to no malt flavor. Very light and crisp with a good amount of carbonation. No bitterness or hop to the aftertaste.

Pour the bottle is cloudy with yeast floating and settling towards the bottom it had a thin white head that disappeared after about 3 minutes, the aroma is yeasty almost like dough yeast, the taste is initially grapefruit almost a little sour and surprisingly finished crisp, there’s not a lot of hop influences the beer I’m sure there is some in the beer but I’m not getting a lot of hops on top of the flavor. Overall this is a surprisingly crisp bright beer that would be refreshing on a summer day, it does have a lingering maybe yeast finish. The mouthfeel is thin.

I’m not a huge fan of Berliner’s, but that has nothing to do with why I’m not big on this beer. It’s REALLY bland. There’s no salt (a good thing for me) and there’s no tartness at all.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Way too wheaty and dry, I thought I was drinking liquid sandpaper. Not an enjoyable experience at all.

Aroma is wheat, slight funk, corn, metallic. Appearance is straw, white head. Taste is wheat, corn, metallic, not much else. Mouthfeel is crisp, light body, easy drinking but no aftertaste. Overall, this is a lot closer to a straight wheat ale than a Berliner.

Pale straw-colored beer with a medium foamy bright white head. Grassy nose of hay, light lemon, and a bit of spice. Flavor is mild with some citrus, grass, and light corn syrup followed by a slight bitterness. Crisply carbonated, this is an easy drinking beer with some character, but doesn’t provide much to distinguish it from the herd.

Did not like the first bottle -- maybe it had gone bad. A friend persuaded me to a second try. Much better. Frothy head that dissipates quickly. Malty nose with a grainy finish. Touches of apply and citrus. Moderate acid balanced with moderate maltiness. Not much bitterness. A good summer beer, but won’t stand up to strong pairings.

A 12 fl oz bottle with a packaged date of 6th March 2015 and poured into a short stemmed wine glass. It poured a very cloudy light straw yellow colour with a one finger white head that dissipated quickly to nothing leaving minimal spotty lacing. Aromas are a tangy, lemon honey mix with a hint of apple and pear. Tastes a lightly sour lemon and sour green apple juice. Light bodied with high carbonation. Overall, this was a decent enough Berliner Weisse. It is easy to drink and refreshing but not my favourite for the style.
