Designed as a flavorful session beer, Oarsman Ale uses a classic German brewing technique to impart a light, refreshing tartness. Oarsman Ale grew out of a desire to explore the tradition of session beers, trading intensity for finesse while still creating a worthwhile experience for the taster. The grain bill includes a healthy portion of wheat, while light hopping lend citrus & herbal notes to the aroma. Fermented with Bell’s house ale yeast, Oarsman comes in at 4.0% alcohol by volume. Rather than being the dominant flavor note, the tartness in Oarsman takes on more of a palate-cleansing role, making it perfect with meals or purely on its own.

UPDATED: JAN 21, 2013 Pours clear lager yellow with a small white head that fades immediately. The aroma is sour corn and wheat. The taste is very light, slightly tart, a hint of wheat, and no hops to speak of. It’s an interesting beer. This style works for my mood tonight. I wanted a sour but I didn’t want to open an expensive bottle. This is a good light abv alternative to a sour.

On tap at The Brass Tap poured a clear yellow with a small lasting white head. Aromas of wheat and light lemon zest. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry lightly tart finish. Flavors of wheat, straw and light lemon zest with a crisp dry lightly tart finish.

Bottle to glass. Appearance. Light yellow. Minimal head. Aroma is barley, light hops. Palate is a touch flat. Taste has a touch of sour Apple which I am not sure whether or not helps. Interesting and somewhat pleasant but nothing special. Liking more as I go.

Pours a slightly hazy yellow color with a soapy white head. Notes of sourdough, fresh air, lemon zest, and a bit of grassiness. Lactic mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours hazy yellow with white head. Aroma is wheat, cereal malts, acidity, mixed herbs, faint cheese, and faint lemon zest. Flavor is dry malt character with soft citrus notes, and faint yeast esters; lacking in tartness. Light body.

Very cloudy yellow, white head. Light citrus tartness, kinda horsey-earthy, a bit of clove in towards the end. Not much in the way of sweetness. Effervescent, light body, keep kinda chewy. Pretty quick finish, clean. Fine.

Tap at Apex, post CBC A: Gold bordering on orange, lacking in internal bubbles, no lacing, white head. N: White wine grape, lemon rind, cracker underneath, hint of salt (as if it were a gose), straw, and a touch of peppercorn. T: Tart, not much else. M: Light body, foamy carbonation, no alcohol presence. O: Decent Berliner. Not too big on flavor, and not really as good as 10 Barrel’s offerings. Easy drinking, though.

355 ml bottle from BOTW Rochester, served cold in a tulip glass. Clear golden with a decent, bright white head. Light to moderate lactic sourness, sourdough bread, slightly perfumed. Medium-ish body, fairly full carbonation. Lactic tang, bread dough, sourdough, clean; dry with gentle sourness and a clean sourdough finish. Interesting and simple.

Bottle. Light-medium yellow body, average white head. Wheaty, straw malts, very light, with a quenching tartness. A little salty in the finish, making this more goze-like than truly berlinner. Quite nice.
