A coppery amber lager that showcases a full bodied, malty flavor that is balanced by a refreshing bitterness derived from fine noble hops.

Pours a golden amber in color. Ring of head around the perimeter of the glass. Malt’s in the nose as well as what smells like some sort of corn base. Taste is huge on the malts with just a hint of hops to balance it out. Some signs of toffee. Easy drinking and slightly unimpressive.

Light citrus aroma. Frothy head with strong orange color. Flavors of light roasted toffee like malt, nutty lager flavor, and a light bitter finish with a slight yeastiness. Not bad.

12 oz bottle purchased at John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Poured a clear light orange color. Head was thin and white with decent retention. There wasn’t much lace on the glass at the end. Smelled of sweet corn, malty cereal grain, and an occasional dash of brown sugar. Dry on the tongue. Flavor was malt dominated (some caramel mostly), but accented by subdued noble hops. I didn’t get any significant hop bitterness. This beer didn’t really wow me, but the style isn’t my favorite.

Light copper color with a thin head. Noble hop and grain aroma with a bit of orange. A very dusty and grainy taste. Some slight sourness/tartness at the end of some sips. Very carbonated. A solid Octoberfest.

Batch 8038. This marzen pours a medium orange copper color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel, toast and slightly hoppy. A light to medium bodied marzen. The malts are caramel and toast. The hops are floral and slightly spicy. Lively carbonation. The beer has that toasty and fruity character that you expect from a marzen, but it’s a little thin tasting. Not watery or weak, but I was expecting something a little fuller tasting. Nice balance. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Batch 8038. Poured a darker orange color with a small head. Aroma was of spices with a little caramel. Flavor was more of the same. Good carbonation. It was good, but not great.

UPDATED: SEP 12, 2010 A lot better this time around. I think that maybe I got a fresher example. Nicely done, but not great for the style. Old rating follows. Orange like copper colored body with a light khaki head. The aroma is sweet with glazed donuts and some apples. There is also a note of some caramel. Lots of caramel in the taste with some light apple. There is not much else going on here. Wow, I was disappointed in the this brew. Bell’s mailed in this boring, pedestrian beer.

Pours an orange amber with a decent sized head. Some toastiness and caramel in the aroma. Nice flavor, a light bitterness offsets the sweetness. A very good oktoberfest. copyright grimreeser
