3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2014 Tap @ Bells: Deep rustic copper and cloudy, ruby-red; thin eggshell head. Aroma of raisins, figs, and booze-soaked dates. Strong brandy and wine-like alcohol presence in both aroma and flavor. Very potent, sherry and brandy heat in the throat. Sweetness helps to cut the burn a bit; grapes, raisins, plums. Sweet malt in the form of caramel, sticky toffee, and butter. Astringency in the finish with a bitter bite. Heavy, sticky, oily mouth feel with low carbonation. Great beer, just a little too immature and perhaps too hot to love. Even sipping can be a tough exercise. Tasty though, and would be grand if mellowed out a bit.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft sample. Pours a darker copper with a thin beige head of foam. The aroma is very malty with notes of bread and nuts, but also dark fruits and toffee. Definitely on the sweet side. The beer was listed as 2010 Bells Old Ale. It definitely tasted like it was that old, but it was taken care of nicely while it was cellared. It aged very nicely. Big body with low carbonation.
