Deep, dark, beautiful pour with an average beige head. Wonderful chocolatey aroma and flavorings. Felt a little thinner than the stouts, but still quite good.

On draught at Barley's Smokehouse. If you are going to have "guest taps", make 'em Bell's! Pours deep opaque brown with a medium tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is chocolatey and bready. Flavor is smooth a rich and consists of chocolate, coffee and malt. I detected an ever-so-slight sourness in the finish which was interesting. Overall a good Porter, but I'll still stick with the Stouts from Bell's if given the choice.

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2003 Beer is a deep dark black walnut color with a tan head. Aroma is roasted chocolate with hazelnut. Taste is roasted malt with that touch of chocolate/coffee. Noticable sediment at bottom of glass was an unexpected pleasant surprise. A very enjoyable porter.

Dark black with a thick tan head. Lots of lacing too.
Aroma was roasted chocolate. It had that creaminess to the smell too.
Roasted malts really stand out in the flavor. Lots of chocolate. Low hop presence.
Very smooth palate. One of the smoothest Bells I've tried to date.

Deep dark color...coffee...chocolate and now that I read another rate, I figured out what the taste was I couldn't really identify. It was licorice. There are many superior Porters...but, definetly drinkable...in fact I drank more than my fill of it.

I finally found a place that sells Bells! This was a nice dark beer. It had some very tasty coffee flavors to it, and it looked great. I definitly took the time to savor this one, and plan on doing it again sometime.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2003 Tastes a little like cola, fizzles on the tongue, with more carbonation than I care for. Tastes are of ginger and berries, which are very nice. Unlike many others in the category.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cloudy brown with an off white head. Nice yeasty funk, chocolate, fresh roasted malts, toast, some coffee, and some licorice. Medium bodied with a slight sweet start and a coffee finish (almost dry). I wish there were more assertiveness among the flavors and aromas, but good nonetheless.

For straight up, no fancy additives, this may be America’s best porter. Full, slightly bitter, and of a wonderful nose and flavor. There just aren’t enough days in the week to drink all of the great Bell’s products.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
A muddy medium brown color; this doesn’t look like a porter really. Aroma is a little bit of dark coffee and a whole lot of acidic grains and well, pee. Coffee hints with overdone hops dominate the flavor, with just a hint of winsome smoke. Not a very good porter, despite the high rating.
