Deep dark brown. Aroma was not what I expected in a porter, sure coffee and chocolate notes are there but this has a very smoky malt aroma that sets it apart from most porters. Taste is pretty good although not the best porter Iíve ever had. Some sweet notes and a little bitter in the finish. Again, itís decent but nothing spectacular.

even for a porter this was damn malty... slight chocolate and coffee flavor, the molasses flavor dominated mostly... decent finish; shrug... I like the anchor porter better, but at the university of michigan, this ones pretty easy to find.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pitch black brew with a nice 3/4" head. Aroma is dark roasted coffee. Nice flavor with roasty toasty malt and I think PsychProf hit it with nutty notes. Another excellent brew from Bells. When are they gonna get this stuff to California!

On tap at the Eccentric in Kalamazoo (sorry I missed you PsychProf!): very roasty, coffeeish porter, definitely a "robust" example and as such one of my favorites of the style (or sub-style). Personally it seemed fairly full-bodied to me, but then I hadnít eaten much all day.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rerate: On tap at the Eccentric in Kalamazoo. Conservatively, Iím upping this .2 from the original, because of an almost unreally good nutty taste quality and feel to it. As such, it probably wandered a bit from style, but it worked for me. Original: 1/26/02: Will have to get this again. Sharp roastedness, bitter finish, malty but only the tiniest bit sweet. Seems like it would be good with meat. Body a bit thin. Nearly stoutlike in its roastiness.

Nice coffee and chocolate in the nose and mouth. For this one, I like burnt as opposed to roasted, as it seems to be roasted more than most. Smooth and satisfying.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Nice roasted aroma. Opens up with more hoppy bitterness than Iíd really expect from a porter. The middle is more malty, with the roasted coffee aroma. Finishes malty. Something of a disappointment due to overdone hoppiness.

This is a good porter. I think I got a bit spoiled on some of Bellís finer beers... and this didnít taste nearly as complex and full... nor is it supposed to. This is a smooth porter in the traditional Bellís style.

This is a really good porter. Its much much better on tap for some reason though. In the bottle, it lacks some of the complexity and richness. I donít notice this the same with any other Bells beers, just this one. Still solid in the bottle, but try it on tap.
