3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Bine & Vine Bottleshop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: June 6, 2014
Consumed: June 6, 2014
Misc.: Packaged on April 3, 2014
Poured an almost pitch black color with two fingers of khaki-tan head, which settled along nicely on the top. Very good amount of spiderweb, layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Fantastic retention on the top of the glass all the way down.
Smelled caramel espresso malts. Also toffee, roasty nuts, buttery malts, dark chocolate, caramel fudge and faint coffee beans.
Tasted dark chocolate, crayon, smoky fire, almost ashtray, bitter coffee notes, roasty nutty malts, slight butter malts and a bit of burnt toast.
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.
A pretty good porter overall. Not my favorite, but probably better than most. Iíd have it again.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with brown hues with a one finger tan head with nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, sweet malts, molasses, and some light grassy hops. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi bitter, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice porter that on the lighter side of the style spectrum.

One of my absolute favorite porters, and I love my porters. Very smooth, malty, and rich. The finish stays with you (and I'm glad it does).

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours dark but a little color shows through. Head is very light tan that lingers. Chocolate upfront, with roasted malts and coffee at the end. Not too much coffee. Not too heavy of a porter. It seems a bit more like a strong brown ale than some porters, except for the finish. Medium carbonation. Not too bad of a porter. Easy drinking.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Aroma is lighter but smoky oaky. A little earthy. A little campfire.
Looks ok. A little light on the pour. Look darker brown in the glass.
This really is the most porter like beer I think Iíve ever had.... Lighter but has a nice smoky and metallic and oak note. The key here is the taste is sharp and finishes quickly rather than having a lingering grossness.
Palate is smooth. Lighter but still flavorful.
This is why I love beer and this is why Iím sad I moved from michigan. This beer is so on point.... Perfect for the style. Lighter but with great flavors. The epitome of what a porter should be.

Thereís a dark red, almost orange hue that bleeds through the nearly black color of this porter - just enough to allow you peer inside (something you donít always get from a porter). What you see is what you get here: a dark, roasted experience, but with a thinness that reminds me less of a porter and more of a brown ale.
The roast character in the nose is sweet and almost spiced, and once the beerís in the mouth its more obvious character really surfaces. Itís easy and thin in body, and the only thing thatís remotely harsh about the beer is itís intense roasted flavor. Some chocolate appears up front and oily, resinous barbecue pit-like flavors surface toward the finish. Itís heavily roasted, but thin, and only if I imagine comparing it to a brown ale do I start to notice its hop character. Itís simple, really, heavy on roast but not too taxing on the palate.
