nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 23, 2008 Updated: Aug 1, 2008Re-rated from the tap at Bell’s. Black/ruby pour with a white head. Dark cocoa nose, with a balanced taste of cocoa and coffee. Much better the second time around. (3.7)
Pours from the bottle with a thick head of tan foam laced with plenty of hops. Tastes awfully smokey, as if the roast were burnt, and has a consistency much closer to an ale than a porter. Sadly disappointing. (2.6) crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Jul 20, 2008 Brown with tan head. Roasty, burnt aroma. Taste is similar with a bit of coffee and caramel sweetness coming into the picture. Pretty easy drinking, but kind of bland for a porter. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottle thanks to Alobar. Aroma of chocolate and roast. Taste is similar, with strong chocolate and toffee and coffee up front that fades into a medium coffee bitterness. Good mouthfeel. Good beer. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Jul 16, 2008 Courtesy of tpd975. Pours deep dark with tan head. The aroma is roasty malts to burnt malts that move into coffee and faint toffee notes. The taste is the same with roasted malts and burnt malts bleeding into a bit of coffee and some mild caramel. Very nice. Ends with malt sweetness and burnt malts on the palate going into the after taste. railcat1 (578), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 15, 2008 This was a good dark beer with a nice malty taste and some roasted ones overall a good beer by Bells.CHEERS! sja14 (105), Ohio, USA Jul 13, 2008 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of sweet maltiness and coffee. Tastes like it smells with hints of chocolate. Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jul 12, 2008 Updated: Aug 5, 200812 oz bottle from John’s Grocery.
Aroma: Light smell, little bit of chocolate and roasted malt.
Appearance: Dark brown to black. Nice tan and carbonated head that went away fast. Left a nice lacy swirl.
Flavor: Lots of rich chocolate. Malty and a deep roast.
Palate: Light, lingering chocolate roast. Good carbonation.
Overall: A great session beer. Very drinkable. Bell’s has done better, but still enjoyable and a solid porter. timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2008 Pours black with a small brown head. Roast coffee and malt, not as much mocha/chocolate as some. Earthy and smooth, almost a little creamy. Not as heavy as some either. Very drinkable, best at Bell’s brew pub and beer garden.
