esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Mar 26, 2008 Updated: Jul 7, 2008Reddish brown with a large quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma of deep roasted smoky malts, coffee, wood, peat and bread. Taste of roasted malts, smoke, coffee, chocolate and mild sweet malts. Rich body is well balanced with a mild dry finish that’s lightly bitter and slightly chewy. IMO, among the best porters out there.
At Three Cellars tasting Bell’s Brewery night. Dark brown with medium tan head. Deep roasted smoky malts & some coffee. More of the same in the taste. Decent porter. (8/5/7/4/13)
grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Mar 25, 2008 Pours black with light tan head. Aroma is of earthy tones of roasted malts and chocolate. Mouthfeel is kind of watery but it finished with a nice bitter roasted flavor. Good drinkable porter very well representde of the style. RED08 (3), Portage, Michigan, USA does not count Mar 21, 2008 Pleasant aroma of lightly roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor was very similar to the aroma with lightly roasted malt and just a hint of chocolate. Fairly smooth with some very light bitterness at the finish. Very dark in color, Love this one. Thanks Dan for turning me on to this one. WD Crafty07 (391), Florence, Kentucky, USA Mar 20, 2008 Not sure if I simply had a bad bottle but the aroma was a bit sour and the dark brown pour from a 12 oz bottle was a bit flat with minimal carbonation and and nearly absent head. Flavor wasn’t bad but wasn’t anything to get worked up about. I’ll come back and try this again later to see if it improves with another try. Not a bad beer..but this is Bells...They’ve raised the bar a bit. kwoeltje (1313), Manchester, Missouri, USA Mar 17, 2008 (cask - Birreria Pizzeria in Georgetown) black with moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts and coffee. Flavor is roast malt, coffee, some chocolate. Great on cask. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 14, 2008 12 oz. into a pint glass. Pours thick and black with a soft light tan head that fades quickly and provides little lacing. It has aromas of chocolate, molasses, tobacco, earth, licorice, and smokey rubber. It has a decently thick body for your palate with a smooth texture. The flavor is strong on the palate but fades after a bit. The flavor includes hints of coffee and roasted malts. Overall, I think it is another great Bells beer. Collint (452), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Mar 12, 2008 12 oz bottle. Poures a thin light tan head with pretty decent lacing, maybee thats were all the head went. I expected this beer’s aroma to be better. Aroma is basic sweet and malty. Color is black and flavor is weak chocolate and light coffee. I think this beer only lacks acohol. Surly tastes like a Bell, I expected more. Kinda platitudinous Porter. beerbill (1920), Laurel, New York, USA Mar 12, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of Secret Santa. Pours virtually black with a thin tan head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and left a sheet of lace with each sip. Pleasant aroma of lightly roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor was very similar to the aroma with lightly roasted malt and just a hint of chocolate. Fairly smooth with some very light bitterness at the finish. This is a very solid porter and represents the style well.
