MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Dec 25, 2007 A Mes rate: 355ml bottle at Steve’s Xmas booze up. Black red with a thick tan head. Heavy unbrewed malt in the nose with some slight coffee and chocolate. The flavour doesn’t quite balance right. Odd cereal note leaving a lengthy finish that I’m just not too sure about. drseamus (103), Troy, New York, USA Dec 24, 2007 A: Dark mahogany colored body with a thick head that fell quickly. A bit on the light side for a porter, but not unreasonably so.
S: It has a powerful aroma and smells great. There are hints of roasted malt, chocolate, and a bit of dark roast coffee.
T: The taste is more subdued than the aroma but is nice and smooth. There is coffee and chocolate, but the flavors aren’t as rich as they should be.
M: This is pretty light bodied for a porter but it still feels pretty good. It’s on the light end of medium bodied.
D: Not a bad porter at all, albeit on the lighter side body-wise. TheBeerGod (3143), Newport News, Virginia, USA Dec 23, 2007 Bottle. Basically black with mahogany around the edges. Tall mocha colored frothy head. Aroma is cocoa, dark chocolate and light coffee amongst roasted malt. Taste is very chocolatey! Lots of roasted malts, light coffee and cocoa atop a mound dark chocolate. Body is medium but creamy and smooth. Finishes is a bit more bitter and roasty but still pushes out cocoa, chocolate and coffee. Very tasty beer here! Would be a great session beer! sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Dec 23, 2007 Tasted 11/29/07. 12oz bottle. Batch #8146. Thick and opaque with a brown hue. Spiraling beige head. Toasty cookie aromas with a touch chocolate and coffee and anise. Nice Nose! Medium to full bodied. Smooth cocoa toasty malts. Mild acidity. Mildly dry with good crisp hop finish. Flavors of anise cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Totally solid! Nice melding from initial to finish. Good roast and delicious. More sweet chocolate style flavors and less dark berry notes. That’s what I like in a porter. One of my new favorite porters! TikiE (360), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Dec 11, 2007 Updated: Mar 12, 2008Good porter! Im a big fan of Bells, and am starting to try alot of them. This one is dark, with a sweet thin tan head, and has an amzing chocolate smell. The after taste is of chocolate also. Good beer! biznizness (930), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA Dec 8, 2007 Very good, but not the knockout that I was expecting from Bells. Somehow the finish just came up short for me... needed something more bitter I guess. Still, good brew. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Dec 7, 2007 Picked up a sixer of this for a BJCP training tasting, then realized I hadn’t even rated it myself yet. Here is to the hedonistic scale. Very dark brown, but light does make it through, thin head fades to a ring. Light in appearance for style. Aroma is coffee with some chocolate in the background, nice. Flavor is a great balance of coffee, chocolate, and roast notes, with the faintest hint of spruce on the finish. Light bodied but in no way thin. Tasty. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 6, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with slight red halo. Foamy, airy head, one finger, that disapates to a small frothy rim. Big malt and coffee nose. Coffee, coffee, coffee. Big coffee flavor, touch of sweetness with chocolate, very carbonated. There’s a touch of smoke towards the end. Hop bitterness is a bit astringent, leaving an "hours old black coffee" flavor on the tongue. That’s not a bad thing. A very stylistic brew.
