Here is to the hedonistic scale. Very dark brown, but light does make it through, thin head fades to a ring. Light in appearance for style. Aroma is coffee with some chocolate in the background, nice. Flavor is a great balance of coffee, chocolate, and roast notes, with the faintest hint of spruce on the finish. Light bodied but in no way thin. Tasty. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 6, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with slight red halo. Foamy, airy head, one finger, that disapates to a small frothy rim. Big malt and coffee nose. Coffee, coffee, coffee. Big coffee flavor, touch of sweetness with chocolate, very carbonated. There’s a touch of smoke towards the end. Hop bitterness is a bit astringent, leaving an "hours old black coffee" flavor on the tongue. That’s not a bad thing. A very stylistic brew. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

While a bit thin (as noted by other raters), it is very easy to drink and has the roasted, sweet coffee flavor that exemplifies the style. Nice with food, a bit flat on its own. melvin980 (184), Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a deep brown color with a thin, light tan head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Flavor is much the same, with light hints of cocoa. Smooth and easy drinking, but a bit thin. Simple, decent porter.
