marcus (1826), Sacramento, California, USA Aug 20, 2009 Courtesy of bhensonb. This dark brown ale poured with a rich tan head and a strong chocolate aroma. The flavor is also chocolate with lots of coffee and a bitter finish. This is a very nice porter. Thanks Bill. blklab2007 (943), Connecticut, USA Aug 19, 2009 bottle batch#9022 poured a dark chestnut brown with a one finger foamy light tan head. aroma has chocolate malt, light roasted coffee, and nuts. medium mouth feel with plenty of carbonation frothing up the body a bit. flavor has some bitterness, chocolate, rich brown malt, roast, and a firm finish of bitterness and coffee. brings on the flavors for a porter. Hengest (4), Michigan, USA does not count Aug 19, 2009 Bell’s batch # 9015. It is getting harder to find a plain old porter in my area. This one, fortunately, does fit the bill and I’ve ended up depending on it over the last year or so. Poured into a Bell’s pint glass, brown but not opaque, it gets an initial smallish head that fades in 30 seconds to just a hint around the rim. It doesn’t jump up and grab me at first taste, nothing stands out, but it warms slowly into a vaguely coffeeish malty treat, which I find surprisingly sessionable notwithstanding. The aftertaste is where you notice some hops, with a few sourish notes around the edges. I recommend this one for drinking with "beer food", especially. FlyFishingBob (14), Clinton Township, Michigan, USA Aug 12, 2009 On tap at home. This beer is loaded with coffee and chocolate flavors. The smell of the beer really contributes to the whole experience. Dark brown with a thick, dark tan/ light brown head. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Aug 10, 2009 12 oz bottle at the Abbey in Deland. Chocolate, vanilla, creamy aromas. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Smooth chocolate malts with vanilla, roasted malts, a pretty solid porter. snakeoilpete (324), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 7, 2009 Bottle in motel room in middle-of-nowhere Indiana. Pours very dark brown with a gargantuan rocky beige head that remains foamy and leaves tons of lace. Aroma is smoky and roasty with a little chocolate. Tastes a little astringent with smoke, chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal. Finishes surprisingly smooth and clean with plenty of roasty bitterness. carlb (36), East Lansing, Michigan, USA Aug 6, 2009 Pours a beautiful dark brown with 2 inch tan head formation. The pouring suggests a medium body, which is later confirmed. The head is persistent and settles in at 1.5 inches a flat, creamy top and plethora of micro-bubbles intermingled with larger cavities up to 1/8th inch. As you drink this ale the Belgian lace is well formed and decorative. The nose provides deep roasted notes. Hops are not evident. The porter has a medium body with a light cream texture. The suggestive chocolate and coffee notes join the maltyness, making the ale very nicely balanced. Carbonation is pleasant. The alcohol is moderate and not noticeable on the palate. Combined with delicious lingering this porter definitely invites repeat tastes. Another moreish ale! Light enough to be a restorative and a refresher, yet full enough of flavor to satisfy most any palate. thorongil2 (54), , Ontario, Canada Aug 5, 2009 (bottle) dark brown colour, almost no head; initial light longan aroma followed by malts; light malty flavour; slight bitter finish. After excellent Bells stouts I am quite disappointed with it, too watery and light on taste for me.
