A dark ale for all occasions. A blend of dark malt gives this beer flavors of coffee and chocolate with some smokey roasted notes.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip. Bellís Porter pours a slightly thin looking mahogany brown color with a modest, creamy, off-white cap that is surprisingly resilient and leaves levels of lace down the glass. The aroma is mostly roasted malt, but there are noticeable traces of prunes and plums in there, as well as a dark chocolate presence. Each sip starts out with a nice sweetness, which is mostly composed of molasses. A blended dark fruit presence of prunes and plums add to the sweet flavor. Roasted malts, unsweetened dark chocolate, and just a hint of coffee come in to impart a bitter flavor in place of the sweetness toward the end. The body is right in the middle for the style, with a slightly fuller, creamy carbonation that the usual porter. It is somewhat sticky from the sweetness. I did not totally connect with this offering from Bells, but it is definitely easy to drink.

Thereís a dark red, almost orange hue that bleeds through the nearly black color of this porter - just enough to allow you peer inside (something you donít always get from a porter). What you see is what you get here: a dark, roasted experience, but with a thinness that reminds me less of a porter and more of a brown ale. The roast character in the nose is sweet and almost spiced, and once the beerís in the mouth its more obvious character really surfaces. Itís easy and thin in body, and the only thing thatís remotely harsh about the beer is itís intense roasted flavor. Some chocolate appears up front and oily, resinous barbecue pit-like flavors surface toward the finish. Itís heavily roasted, but thin, and only if I imagine comparing it to a brown ale do I start to notice its hop character. Itís simple, really, heavy on roast but not too taxing on the palate.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Dark smoky mocha aromas. Dry with sweet chocolate upfront turning to mild smoke before the lasting espresso finish.

12 oz bottled 3.5 months ago, purchased at Johnís Grocery ($1.79) and poured into a pint glass at home. Black appearance with a lingering tan head and thick lacing. Aroma of roast, dark malts, chocolate, coffee and caramel. Similar flavor, adding a mild earthy bitterness. Medium body, slick and smooth with average carbonation, a little dry. Rich and robust, but still pretty easy to drink.

Solid porter with nice chocolate flavors. Soft flavors and very approachable clearly distinguishes itself from a stout which a lot donít.

Good smells upon opening the bottle. Very full yet clean mouthfeel with coffee notes on the finish. Iím not a coffee drinker so I like when porters are not overwhelmingly coffee flavored. This one is nicely balanced. Very drinkable.

Pours an opaque blackish brown with a small tan head. Nose is dark roasted malt with a hint of chocolate. Nice and creamy on the palate with average viscosity. Taste is of dark roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate. Very light on the hops flavor resulting in a very smooth flavor. Pairs well with a corned beef sandwich on rye.
