3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Bell’s Porter pours a slightly thin looking mahogany brown color with a modest, creamy, off-white cap that is surprisingly resilient and leaves levels of lace down the glass.
The aroma is mostly roasted malt, but there are noticeable traces of prunes and plums in there, as well as a dark chocolate presence.
Each sip starts out with a nice sweetness, which is mostly composed of molasses. A blended dark fruit presence of prunes and plums add to the sweet flavor. Roasted malts, unsweetened dark chocolate, and just a hint of coffee come in to impart a bitter flavor in place of the sweetness toward the end.
The body is right in the middle for the style, with a slightly fuller, creamy carbonation that the usual porter. It is somewhat sticky from the sweetness.
I did not totally connect with this offering from Bells, but it is definitely easy to drink.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
"Packaged April 3, 2014"...two years old now. 12 ounce bottle purchased at Bine & Vine ($2.19). POURS a very dark brown (basically black) with a good finger and a half of tan foam. AROMA of quality roasted malts, mild coffee, leather, with a bit of nutty vanilla. FLAVOR of earthy dark malts, some dark chocolate, light black coffee, and dark caramel. A bit of lingering roastiness into the finish. Somehow this is overly light in body. Not bad but was hoping for more heft and character. (1493, 1021)

Nice and dark, without much head. Lacing was minimal. Aroma was good, but very subtle. Smoky and sweet taste, with just a little bitter aftertaste. Overall, a decent beer, but kind of forgettable.
