Dark mahogany brown. The tan head is fairly large, lasts a while and leaves broken sheets of lace on the glass. The nose is of roasted black malt, dark chocolate, vanilla and dark red wine. So far, so good. The flavor, like the aroma, is considerably roasted malty with lovely bittersweet chocolate notes. Notes of cordial cherries are present as well, but chocolate shares equal billing. There’s also a restrained hoppiness that balances the finish which is long and increasingly bitter, especially as the beer warms. Firm, not quite full body with a lively carbonation. Good mouthfeel overall; a little fizzy for a porter, but it is tolerable. Bell’s Porter is a quality brew like all their offerings. It’s carbonation sets it apart from others and its noticeable hoppiness sets it apart from the others. These qualities neither detract of add to the quality; they just make it uniques.

Transfer from BA review on 1-31-13- Served on firkin in a pint glass Appearance – Served a deep brown colored brew with a tiny tan colored head. The head fades very fast to leave a moderate level of lacing on the glass. Smell – The aroma was heaviest of a blend of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Mixed with these darker aromas is a light sweetness of caramel. Taste – The taste begins with roasted malt and chocolate flavors. The chocolate is of a more milk chocolate like flavor in the beginning as there is some sweetness of caramel and vanilla upfront mixed. These sweeter flavors dry a bit as some coffee comes to the tongue to create a more dark chocolate flavor on the tongue. In the end some light earthy hop flavors come to the tongue and with the coffee flavors bitter the taste. In the end a dry and light bittered taste for a porter is left to linger on the tongue Mouthfeel – Being a firkin pour the carbonation was rather light. The body of the beer was on the average to maybe slightly above average side in terms of its creaminess. The slightly thicker body and lower carbonation were quite nice for the roasted and sweeter flavors of the brew making for a rather nice drinking porter. Overall - A good easy drinking brew.

pours unclear if not dirty dark brown-reddish with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. dark roasted malts, coffee grinds, ashy and dusty - could be cleaner, hint of maple and minerals, some red fruitiness. moderately low carbonation, light body, dry coffee-resinous-ashy finish. let-down. still.. o-k.

35,5 cl bottle @ tiong, bottled 26.12.2013
Aroma has roasty malty tones, licorice, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavour has roasty tones, toffee, some licorice and hints of cold coffee. Also hints of syrup and toasted sugar. Sweet and thin, a bit disappointing.

Drank from a twelve ounce bottle. Amazing aromas of malts and chocolate. Good flavor but tastes too much like a generic porter. Not much complexity.
