The rye adds a deep earthy aroma to the nose, the color is black and the head voluminous, beige in color, the lace is thick upon the glass. Start is grainy, the middle moderate as is the carbonation, the finish dry and some what hop spicy. Excellent beer, another winner in my eyes.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2005 This was my least favorite of the November stouts. I’m not complaining, but usually each Bell’s stout has a big selling point. This one just fell short.

A relaxed stout with long roastiness and a warm and subtle hint of spice. So elusive, though - licorice? carraway?. Anyway, it’s a great end of the day, relax with good conversation brew.

Way better than the McGills Spiced Stout...Little head, dry ,and delicious...I wish I had a loaf of rye bread with me to do some comparison tests and analysis, but theres none to be found in my house... oh well, maybe next time...

A nice stout from Larry Bell. Delicious stout fragrance enhanced by the spicyness of the rye. Dark brown color and a minimal head. A thick, full-bodied texture brings out a very tasty treat. The rye serves to add a bit of complexity to an otherwise by-the-books stout. Very smooth with an extended toasted flavor continuing afterward. Pretty good!
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 tourette (188) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 24, 2001
Another good stout from Bell’s. Not their best, but still better than most. Very smooth.

Typical Bells stout look and feel. The rye provides a slightly spicy/grainy flavor to the beer. The spice is more subdued than in the Harry McGills. I thought it worked pretty well.

The first rye stout that I’ve had. Very interesting. The rye imparts a somewhat spicy and non-stout like flavour, but it seems to work well. It’s on the sweeter side of stouts as well.

Another thin, headless and surprisingly flavorful beer from Bell’s. Strong notes of coffee in the finish, moderate bitterness and quite smooth. Would like it a little thicker though.
