Aroma is a little spicy with chocolate and dark karo syrup notes. Deep black with a quickly fading tan head. For is spicy and tobacco tinged with the flavor what I imagine hot water that had had rye seeds steeped in it would taste of. Spicy pepper notes tickle the tonsils as I swallow. A smooth choclate malt flavor runs through all ranges. The finish kind of reminds me of a very toned down version of the Stone 03 03 03 and its lingering spiciness. Interesting, but it gets thin and the lack of any real head hurts the visual appeal.

Nice stout, like all of Bell’s stouts. The "rye" issue doesn’t hit home for me here. It mostly keeps its basic stout style and taste. A bit sweet as well.

Good toasty smokey aroma with notes of rye and malt, with a slight lactic note. Flavor is toasty and malty, with more rye notes and a very light bitter findh with a touch of esspresso. Nice beer!

On tap at the Institute in Philly. Nearly opaque black with a white, wispy head. Aroma of burnt toast, nuts, coffee, some distinct spiciness too. Flavor is solid, milk chocolate, oatmeal, sweet. Full bodied, a little sticky. The rye adds some complexity that some other stouts don’t have.

Black, light tan creamy head. Soft roasty cocoa cream and coffee aromas warm to lighter notes of earthed mushroom and black bread. Upfront roasted choco-cream flavors are nicely balanced with a light spicy rye and dark fruity tone from start to finish. Medium bodied, fluffy carbonation, bittersweet finish. Good, but I’ll stick to the Bell’s mainstream for my stout fix…

bottle. deep dark brown, near black body with a small brown head that quickly fizzes away. smells of coffee, bread loaf, and maybe some grape lingering in the back. creamy smooth body with bread and chocolate flavours. quite rich and delectable as it warms with no apparent bitterness. bought at The Beer Depot in Ann Arbor.
