A little more rye in the aroma and flavor would have gotten this beer way into the 4’s. As it is, I had to knock off some points for the lack of rye in the aroma and flavor. That said, the aroma was very nice with roasted malts, coffee, chocolate. The flavor was similar. Very smooth and creamy in the mouth. Great looking too. Just not much rye for me.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jason (1670) - Easton, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 17, 2007
Bottle batch #7235. Poured a black body with thin head. Aroma was of chocolate, malt, toffee, caramel. Flavor was slightly sweet and dry. The above mentioned aromas comming thru in the taste with a little spice in it. Creamy mouthfeel. Good stout.

Dark, almost black pour with a small tan head. Nice roasted malt aroma with hints of rye, coffee and chocolate. Taste is an interesting roasted grain mixture, dominated by the rye - but a bit less than I expected. I just tried Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye DIPA and am partial to other rye DIPAs and Strong Ales so its hard to get into "lesser rye tastes". That said, I’m a big fan of everything Bells. Other tastes include a bit of coffee - almost chicory-like. The body is a bit on the thin side, which is surprising. I like this beer, but I think it would have been better to just brew some Kalamazoo Stout with a bit of rye.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jcr (1624) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - FEB 27, 2006
Thick black pour with tan head that quickly turns into a rim of foam. The aroma is filled with rye and burnt malts. A slight musty odor wafts from a quick swirl of the beer. Burnt, somewhat bitter malts and rye dominate the taste which also has hints of coffee. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with a charred flavor. Medium to full body.

Pour is appropriately black. Very little head, but still attractive. The aroma is slightly roasty with a good amount of smooth chocolate. The flavor has just a touch of spiciness that I thought wasn’t normal for a stout. However the rye is masked and I doubt I would have noticed if I didn’t know what I was looking for. still a very good stout.
