3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 joshwilfong (1200) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - OCT 14, 2009
pitch black with initially thick, but almost instantaneously disappearing white head. dark malts to the nose. some hop bitterness followed by some medium crystal malt sweetness followed by some dark malt, that seems to be more of a black patent than a roasted flavor, maybe a little english hop flavor before some yeasty esters, then a dry finish. interesting brew, a little spice from the rye, but not overwhelming. nice stout, alcohol well hidden
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ehhdayton (1188) - USA - MAY 1, 2006
There is a light roasted aroma with some chocolate and fruit. The pour is a deep black but, the head was virtually nonexistent. The taste is lightly roasted with a smoothness to the finish.

Deep brownish garnett hue. Small tannish head. Grainy nose. Earthiness is evidient all the way through. Sweetness first, firm malt backbone, medium to full bodied, with a pleasant bitter finish. Very interesting, the rye is a great addition.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 cking (1175) - North Canton, Ohio, USA - NOV 8, 2009
Heavy brown body, constant 1/2" dark tan head and good lacing. Peppery/spicy aroma chock full of coffee, chocolate fudge and roasted malts. There is a wonderful underlying fruitiness that comes forward after a bit. Full bodied, extremely creamy with a wonderful sweet finish and a lightly dry aftertaste. Nutty coffee with cream, mild black licorice, chocolate and hints of plum dominate the taste. Good spicy character in the back ground with a faint twang. Another top notch stout by Bells, seems like a drier and spicier version of the Kalamazoo.

I always jump at the chance to try a new Bells, especially a stout. Had this on tap at the Map Room. Pretty full of chocolate flavor, more than I was expecting. Medium bodied. On the palate this is a pretty solid tasting stout, though probably the least good of all Bell’s stouts. The rye definitely kicks in on the finish and I don’t really dig it. Definitely worth checking out, though.

Another review that I accidentally deleted and am having to rewrite.
Thanks to some awesome RateBeerian; over time I have forgotten which, for sending me this tantalizingly delicious beer!
Pours a foggy ink black body and a bountiful tall and resilient tan head. The aroma is bursting with chocolate and toffee malts. There was a note of rye bread there in the finish.. a kind of sunflower seed oily and nutty rendering. The flavor also brought coco and toffee, some date and brown sugars, walnut, a touch of vanilla, and a yeasty, beady tartness in the finish, almost lactic. The palate was chewy and gritty in some places… as Bell’s beers tend to have a decent amount of sediment.
Time has treated this increasingly rare beer rather nicely… I am a lucky man indeed!
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 DrBayern (1139) - Morehead City, North Carolina, USA - OCT 3, 2006
12 oz. bottle courtesy Hellomynameis - another Bell’s from Zac! Large beige head develops from an opaque brown/black pour. I found this aroma hard to pin down. Some light roasted coffee, vanilla, and a grainy note that I’m going to assume is the rye. The aroma was overall subtle, yet pleasant. Very smooth with light carbonation, but a bit thin for a stout. Falvor is rich and malty sweet with hints of chocolate, roasted grain, and maybe some plum or other dark fruit. Just a little spicy bitterness prevents it from being sticky, although the finish is still somewhat sweet. Very pleasant and easy drinking stout.

12 oz. bottle, batch 7235. nothing spectacular yet very drinkable and enjoyable. mild flavors of chocolate, rye, coffee and some oak. low carbonation with a spicey note on the finish. a good summertime stout.
