3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Skyview (4739) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - OCT 26, 2008
Sampled from 12-oz bottle and shared by Bobby91w and Bulldogp04 during Surly D-Day. Pours a clear dark copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that dissipates to a thin off-white ring. Aroma of a dry and powdery multi-grain malt with rye character, a touch of vanilla and some milk chocolate. Taste is actually quite smooth for a three-year old bottle with some powdery malt texture and flavors of milk chocolate, rye, and a light biscuit. Finish is slightly metallic with a mild rye and chocolate aftertaste. Surprisingly not too bad for a alternative malt stout.

[Draft @ Capones] Murky brown with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate, rye, and a bit of metal. Taste was somewhat gritty, I assume it was all the yeast present in the glass, with some roasted grains, cocoa, rye, some smoke, and yeast.

On draught at RFD. Deep chestnut brown with a scant white head. Aroma of rye bread with some roasted coffee beans. Very creamy body, almost chewy like a Guinness. Very subtle flavor of dark milk chocolate at first, progressing to a dark pumpernickel, then finishing with a bitter edge. A keeper.

Draught at Capone’s: Aroma of malts, chocolate, rye, and light roasting. Poured dark brown in color with a huge, foamy, creamy, brown head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout. Opaque. Very good lacing. Flavor is slightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malts, chocolate, roasting, rye, and a hint of espresso. Medium body. Creamy, lightly thick texture. Soft carbonation. Chocolate, rye, and malt, finish is slightly sweet, lightly bitter, and slightly dry.

Bell’s is liquid crack for Stout lovers like me. This beer pours almost black with a medium thin light brown head. Very little lacing. Nice bittersweet aroma of chocolate and black cherry. Flavor is a smooth blend of roasted coffee and what I am assuming must be rye. Points for pulling off something unique so well.

Draft pint at Taphouse. Moderate lacing. This drinks with a silky mouthfeel that’s quite unique. Bells makes some stellar stouts but this one, while pleasant enough, fails to stand out. But maybe that’s the point. (#3770, 12/14/2009).

12 oz bottle, original vintage (November 2002) shared with and by the most generous ClarkVV at his tidy abode. The head on this 3 1/2 year-old was well retained, dark and smooth atop the black body....the nose is obviously, immediately oxidized but offers light bready spicing, carroway and also perhaps juniper, chocolate and espresso begin to dominate quickly and take over after a few moments....in the body, lots of wine (burdundy), rye bread and light fruity coffee mix with Mexican chocolate and touches of dry crackling yeast....body is still fairly full, not thinned much at all and the carbonation is low but pleasant and evident....light grapiness and hints of sourness are the only real hints of age, an absolute gem thank you so much Clark for sharing, and I’m sure glad this has returned!
