Beer pours dark brown with a tan colored head that is moderately retained. Aroma is coffee and cream with some rye. Flavor is likewise. Very nice coffee flavor with some rye flavor as well. Enjoyable.

One of the ’10 Stouts of November’ put out by Bell’s. Very hoppy for a stout, somewhat spicy. Good.

Bottled. Black body with a light khaki colored head. The aroma is earthy with musty old mushrooms and some dark chocolate. There is also a note of oak. The taste is definitely the rye with some chocolate and a bit of good coffee. There is also a bit of salt in the finish with some peaches. Low carbonation, but it fits the style. An interesting stout.

rich brown liquid with very little head. Nose is medium dry, slight carmel. a little nutty malt. Body is right and full. Taste is a a subtle and delicious roasty dryness with a good malt flavor. Nice finish with just a shade of creaminess.

Bottle from Bello Vino in Ann Arbor. Deep, rich brown colour with a very faint off-white head. Lots of roasted malt and dark rye bread notes in the aroma. Nice flavour - lots of roast & rye as predicted by the aroma, along with a bit of coffee & smoke, and a nice tartness in the finish. Very well put together, I liked this one a lot.

An opaque reddish amber with a small tan head. Coffee, crisp hop, and fresh pumpernickel aroma. The rye is noticable from a middle of the mouth astringent feel so you can detect the sharp nuttiness of the rye. This is most noticable in the aftertaste.

Pours black, with a light brown head. Aromas are roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Flavors are roasted malt and rye, coffee, chocolate, and hops. Pretty good, but it seems to be missing just a little something. Thanks to MikeMac for this bottle.

Bottle. Batch 7235. Pours respectable stout color with a thin eggshell brown head. Smell is yeasty at first (bottle-conditioned), then turns into cocoa-coffee stout smell. Rye gave it a passing rememberance of wheat malt smell. Taste is a bit odd to start, still a touch of yeast. The foam at the top somehow has the oily texture of Expedition. Then some stout sourness, and finally the spicy twist from the rye. Perhaps a hint of licorice. Interesting to find complex texture in a beer, not just complex taste. Seems to be the basic English hop profile, amped up just a wee bit. Alcohol seems cooling rather than warming. Thanks to Bell’s "Bootlegger’s Special" for us deprived Illinoisians driving to Kzoo for my chance to try this.
