COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

Pours deep black with a large building ddark tan head. The aroma is full; malty and rye with a dry character. It is a very nice and distinct aroma profile. There is quite a bit of sweetness from the malt. Creamy and full, a pincy of a sharp rye. Definately a bready malt flavor, very clean and with a bit of a clean chocolate and chalky finish.

(draft) I found this to be a basic stout with a slight chocolate flavor and a touch of rye bitterness at the finish. I liked it a lot, and I will probably go try to find it in bottles.

Nice stout, like all of Bell’s stouts. The "rye" issue doesn’t hit home for me here. It mostly keeps its basic stout style and taste. A bit sweet as well.

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2009 Bottle and rerate (batch 9370). Similar to the previous rating with these changes: aromas lack a "sourness." Instead, they are earthy and nutty with detectable rye. Flavor seems to be sweeter... no longer a bitterness. This sweetness seems to bury a little bit of the rye presence, though. All I can think this time is that I would LOVE to try a barrel aged version of this... (I made no changes to the numbers.) Looks just like a good stout, dark, tan head, etc. Smells a little off... sour, earthy aromas of peat and minimal chocolate undertones. Rye is present in flavor, and then gives way to burn malt and bitter chocolate. Finally ends up with a cream flavor that dissipates quickly. Could finish a little stronger, aftertaste is pretty brief. Different.

Bottle. Pours a black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty coffee aroma. Roasted malty coffee and chocolate flavor with some hints of rye. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee finish.

Black with brown edges. Small, tan head settles completely. Nose and taste of burnt, roasty, grainy malt, coffee beans, and cocoa powder. Mocha aftertaste. Medium/full, balanced body. Great dry, roasty stout.

Light and refreshing for a stout. But no lack of flavor. Like drinking a piece of rye bread withoult the bulk. Also hint of some dark dry fruit such a prunes.
