12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown (deep copper when held to a light) with a small creamy beige head. The aroma was sweet with notes of caramel and dark chocolate, black coffee, and rye. The flavor is roasted malts, rye, coffee at times, and milk chocolate. This is not big in any way. Medium bodied with a creamy smooth mouthfeel. Enjoyable, I’m glad to see they are making this again.

12 oz. bottle; batch 9370; pours clear light brown with thin off-white head fades fast; dry roasty aromas with mild rye spice and more of a smoky, tobacco aroma; quite nice; thin with a sweet roast and mild chocolate; oaty, mild rye spice and a little tobacco too; quite nice, but I just wish there was a little more of everything; has a subtle roasty dryness and nuttiness as it warms
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Skeegle (566) - Maryland, USA - JAN 3, 2010
Nice beer, though I’ll admit that I am very anti rye in my beverages. Deep dark brown. Nice flavors of cocoa and roasted roasty flavors like chicory, peat, chocolate malt and rye on the finish. The rye doesn’t taste as pungent as in IPAs made with rye, probably because it was roasted?? No idea, but this is a solid stout, of course, since it’s from Bells ;-)

Pours black with a light tan thin head. Spicy, smoky, chocolate and rye aroma with a touch of hops. Smooth roasted grain, cocoa, spicy rye taste with a touch of smoke. Outstanding brew.

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2009 I think I’m turning into a suck for rye. Sweet, malty, hoppy, flavor with some spices thrown in the mix. Different and actually quite complex. Balanced and easily drinkable.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a white-ish head, looks like a fairly typical stout. Smells like vegetable soup... mostly cabbage, some cooked carrots. Really unique and kind of bad smelling, but maybe something I could get used to depending on the taste. Tastes surprisingly good, chocolate, rye bread, a little bit of hops. Decent beer, definitely unique, and drinkable despite the vegetable soup taste/smell. I like it, and I think I’d buy it again.

Bottle from batch 9399. Pours a very dark brown almost black color with a small tan colored head of foam that settles quickly to a thin film of bubbles. The aroma shows notes of dry cocoa, caramel malt, some earthy roast, and fresh rye grains, This one really opens up once it has warmed up. The flavor follows with the dark cocoa and caramel malts, earthy roast, and fresh toasted rye grains. Some spicy hops add a nice bitterness on the finish. The ry and the cocoa really work together nicely. Medium bodied and smooth and a lengthy, dry cocoa and rye finish. This is a really nice and easy to drink stout.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, IL. and served to a Bell’s shaker. The color was a murky, dark brown with a diminishing, light tan, tiny bubbled, foam head and some curtains and spots of lacing. The aroma was roasty, coffee, and subtle hints of smoke and char. The flavor added to the aroma notes a touch of molasses and caramelly sweetness, low hop bitterness, and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. A very presentable stout.
