COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An abundance of rye grains provide a spicy twist to otherwise traditional stout flavors. A unique approach to an entirely new style of stout.

12oz bottle, batch 72xx, flavors have faded a bit, rye still smooths out the beer, but the in your face coffee, roasty flavors are subdued greatly, not bad by any stretch, nice easy sipping even on a hotter midsummer night.

Dark almost soda like appearance - mild carbonation. Faint aroma of roasted rye. Mild taste with some rye and sweet fruit.

Sampled from 12-oz bottle and shared by Bobby91w and Bulldogp04 during Surly D-Day. Pours a clear dark copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that dissipates to a thin off-white ring. Aroma of a dry and powdery multi-grain malt with rye character, a touch of vanilla and some milk chocolate. Taste is actually quite smooth for a three-year old bottle with some powdery malt texture and flavors of milk chocolate, rye, and a light biscuit. Finish is slightly metallic with a mild rye and chocolate aftertaste. Surprisingly not too bad for a alternative malt stout.

Thanks to my 2007 Secret Santa for this. Batch 7235. Black, with a bubbly head. Initially hoppy/ rye nose, then mostly toast. Roasted malt, chocolate and rye. Very interesting

12oz bottle (Batch 9370) served in an English pint glass. Dark brown pour with a thin, short-lived head of tan foam. Light lacing. The aroma consisted of chocolate, caramel, rye, and toasted nuts. The flavor was more rye forward, featuring a nice spiciness followed by chocolate, heavy roast, a bit of smoke, and also some caramelized sugar. Medium to full-bodied with a light amount of prickly carbonation. If you enjoy rye, there is plenty in this beer. Interesting stout...pretty good.

Bottle, batch 9399. Pours a dark mahogany color that shows slightly translucent at the outer edges. A moderate, spongy head of khaki colored foam dissipates quickly, settling to a bubbly film and leaving scant traces of lacing on the glass. The nose is very mild, but nice, showing notes of dry, chalky cocoa, fresh rye grain, dry caramel, and hints of earth and smoke. Flavors are very well crafted and easy going, showing the same dry, dark caramel and cocoa, mild rye and toasty grain, with traces of pumpernickel and dry, slightly chalky yeast. Peppery, spcy hops come through on the finish. The body is medium-plus in stature, dry, yeasty, and easy going. Overall, I enjoyed this quite a bit. Very solid stout.

Bottle. Dark brown, tan head fades quickly. Tons of roast up front in aroma, smoke, and only hints of rye. Flavor has a bit more of the spicy rye character, but roast and smoke still dominate.

Pours dark brown with a few fingers of tan head. Sweet odor of brown sugar and sweet malts. Nice mouth feel, very warm sweetness to it. Leads to a nice bread-y chocolate finish. It’s nice for a cold night
