3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MAP (1133) - Lakewood, Ohio, USA - DEC 15, 2003
Well, I dont like rye, but I do like stouts, so who knows how this will turn out. Well, this is far better than I had expected. The rye was no where near what one could plan on getting in rye bread. Flavor has a small spicy bite at first, then fades away for a nice smooth finish.

black body with no head, roasty nose, sweet vanilla highlights, mildly bitter, chocolate and a pinch of Larry’s own eccentric juices

I really like this stout. They say it has a spicy twist, but I don’t find it too much in the bottle that I got. What I do find is a fantastic, balance, chewy flavor. Nice long finish, feels great on the palate. I could drink a 6-pack of this stuff easy. Great session stout.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2003 This brew poured a small head of light brown bubbles and an opaque black colored body. It had a strong coffee and rye taste with good lacing. Its initial fizzyness made it hard to taste the initially flavor, but it finished well.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Silphium (2711) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - JUN 29, 2003
UPDATED: FEB 22, 2006 Re-rate based on Batch #7235, 2006 bottling.I’m glad the Rye Stout is back, in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Deep brown body with reddish highlights, thin tan head. Roasted malt aroma with distinctive spicy rye character. Toasty, roasted malt body with spicy, earthy rye that lingers on the palate. No offensive tartness or acidity. Rather delicate and quaffable for a Bells stout, this is a perfect session beer. Like biting into lightly toasted rye bread.
Previous rating: Smells like a fine cup of coffee. Pours dark brown/red, with a thin tan head. Flavor is strong roasted malts, rye, and a tangy sweetness that I do not remember being as strong when the beer is fresh. Nonetheless, enjoyable. Trumpeter’s Stout is the best November offering by these guys. 8-4-7-4-15
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Mangino (1027) - Mississippi, USA - JAN 27, 2007
Thanks to JPDipso for the spur of the moment trade at the checkout line of the liquor store. Pours an impregnable black color, a small ring of foam lines the top of the beer. Not alot of aroma on this one bits of chocolate, spicyness from the rye, my brother says some hazlenut. Good balanced flavor, some roast and the rye combine nicely. The finsh is somewhat lacking. I would like a bit more chocolate/coffee flavor but thats just me. Good brew.

Medium head that sticks around for a little while, with clinging lace. See through black in color. Sweet roasty rye malts on the nose with hints of dough and toffee. Mouthfeel is a little light, not a big beer but one I could definatly session. Nice dry finish.
