3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Slick (1971) - Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA - APR 17, 2006
Very dark brown, small tan head that faded quickly leaving nothing behind. The aroma was nicely roasty with a slight grainy side and a bit of a coffee and maybe chocolate side coming through as well.Nice roasty flavor with a smooth feel and some chocolate and mild burnt side coming through towards the middle and end.The brew finishes up with a nice bitterness and long flavor of roast as well that hangs on the pallate.Very nice brew that goes down smooth and with plenty of well balanced flavor.Well worth trying again.

Bottle. A chocolate, nutty, milky, and coffee aroma. The rye is a very nice twist on the stout and is evident in the flavor and aftertaste. Fairly thin body.

Similar to Bells Stout, but the rye adds a nice flavor and finish to it... a great change of pace beer.

Not your powerhouse stout! But as a Southerner, this lighter bodied stout is flavorful, chewy and much easier drinking than the other Bell's Stout offerings. Of the 12 stouts of November, this one was my favority.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 WabashMan (924) - Noblesville, Indiana, USA - FEB 11, 2003
Distinctive from other Bells beers...especially their stouts, which often seem to have a strong coffee flavor.

Very dark brown blackish color with an immensely thick and crispy cocoa brown head that grew to about a finger high only to subside fairly quick to a thin ring, leaves a good amount of spotty lace all over the glass as it goes. Smell has a big time sweet roastyness, tangy dark cherryness with sweet chocolate, vanilla, and cookie dough notes, but mostly a very heavy roasted black malt heft on top with some coffee beans and a juicy tart-like sweetness. Taste is more of the same, light roastyness starts it out but is headed off quickly by a major tangy sweetness of dark cherry and maybe some dark orange that coats the palate and mouth with a chewy tanged sweetness which resides some as it fades out bringing in some light sweet chocolate and notches of coffee. Trails of the tangyness lead into the finish which dries out slowly bringing in a touch of bitterness of hops and coffee. Feel is a solid medium body, pretty smooth and creamy with a moderate sweet/tarting bite and a lightly dry finish showing through late. Its a fine stout with a sweet/tart effect thats OK, maybe if that tang were held off by just a bit it would be better. Seems to closely resemble the Cherry Stout, with a bit bit more roastyness in the nose. Possibly the same ingredients as the Cherry with a slight twist in the recipe?

Thanks to KingpinIPA for the bottle. Very distinctive roasted malt and roasted coffeebeans aroma, dark black small head color, very smooth texture coffee chocolate roasted malt taste, medium bitterness, mild sweetness, tastes like oatmeal in the aftertaste, guess that must be the rye I liked it a lot

An incredible bouquet of roasted malts and coffee. The pour is very dark brown and the flavor profile consists of roast and dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Another solid and diverse stout from Bell’s.
