3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tekhna (118) - California, USA - DEC 17, 2009I’d like this to have a higher overall rating than a 3.5, because I do think it’s better than that. But, not much aroma, thin head that receded quickly. Sweet slightly thick flavor, not sure quite where the rye kicks in but it’s not your traditional roasty flavor. Pretty darn decent.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 b3shine (2234) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 28, 2012
Bottle to snifter (thanks jmikolich). Looks solid; cola with razor-thin light beige lacing (when swirled) and very little carbonation. Smells solid too; malt and rye. Tastes like it smells with some spiciness (presumably from the rye). Average on the palate with a dry finish. A little thinner than I’d prefer, but still a solid beer.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Atom (995) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 27, 2012
12oz bottle thanks to jmikolich, pours a dark brown/black with no head. Aroma of slight rye, molasses, and chocolate. Smooth texture, with hints of rye spice throughout with a nice not overbearing or harsh roast, sweet chocolate, there is just a hint of bitterness and spice on the finish. Easy drinking, really nice!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 northropfrye (1352) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - NOV 12, 2012
I enjoyed this, though I had it along side Black Note, so probably not a fair comparison. I didn’t get a huge "rye" flavour here, that element was more subtle than I was expecting. Overall, though, a high quality stout.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 ekoerper (548) - Iowa, USA - NOV 10, 2012
Chocolate and spicy rye nose, roast malts and hints of coffee. Black in color with a tan head, decent retention and nice lacing. Smooth coffee and roast flavors, spicy rye bread and chocolate, low bitterness, great balance, smooth chocolate finish. Medium to full body, silky texture. Nice.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ESBob (247) - Indiana, USA - JUL 21, 2012
On tap at Bells. Pours a dark black with slight chocolate foam head. Aroma is an earthy roast malt. Very light chocolate and the taste is very smooth roast malt, some spice notes apparent. Reminds me a bit of a black lager. Very good!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Jethro6191 (330) - Indiana, USA - JUL 6, 2012
On tap at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a thin beige head. Some lacing. A subtle roasted malt aroma. Roasted grain, coffee, vanilla, and chocolate flavors with just a hint of the spicy rye flavor that I was expecting. Still a very good beer. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with low carbonation and a dry finish.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeinEscazú (1324) - San Jose, COSTA RICA - MAY 10, 2012
Sampled at Great Taste. A smooth black beer that is sweet enough to be naughty and comforting but stops well short of cloying. Light on the roast, bigger on the chocolate. Has a grainy edge but pepper or spice notes from the rye were not obvious. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jcweaver (697) - VA Beach, Virginia, USA - MAR 10, 2012
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and spicy rye. Flavors of roasted malt, rye, caramel and salty licorice. Not as roasty as some stouts and little to no coffee/chocolate flavors. Still, interesting and pretty tasty.
