Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Cafť. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

Definitely not smitten. I have had a long difficult relationship with rye, and here again...just like with dad...a few sips in I got a headache. Beyond that, I didnít care for the hop profile. Dry, resinous, and I get the bready/earthiness of it, but it finishes too bitter and lingers too hard. Not my style for drinking enjoyment. Bottle.

Cloudy golden-yellow appearance with some sediment, so seems unfiltered. Reminds me of a hoppier/citrusy unfiltered version of their Oberon.

Bottle picked up at a local ABC. This beer is crisp and refreshing, and if you like the rye dryness - this one is for you. It finishes bready and semi sweet with a touch of hop bitterness.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2014 Bottle: Hazy, golden-yellow with light hints of amber; soapy & foamy white head that forms ans settles at a quarter-inch, lasting for a while. Aroma is crisp & sharp; grains, dry rye, dirty & earthy hops with a slight musty afterthought. Grows more floral and rosy with time. The rye keeps its dry nature. A little unflattering, but not bad. Taste has an up-front bitterness from the earthy & floral hops... Not getting much citrus or resin like the description states. Sharp on the tongue. Crisp like a lager. Rye bread and mild yeast esters in the aftertaste. Finishes somewhat dry and clean. Pretty drinkable, clean rye ale.

Had on-tap at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, Michigan. $3 for a 12oz mug. Gimme! Appearance: A beautiful golden color with a tiny head. The lacingís patchy and not that great, but the appearance surely isnít what matters most. Smell: I tried, tried, and tried some more to get aromas out, and for some reason I didnít get that many, but they were more than pleasant. Rye, floral aromas, some sweetness, maybe like a honey... very inviting. Taste/feel: Great stuff. Iíve only had about three or four rye beers in my life, and this one tastes different than most... but I think thatís a good thing. The sweetness of this beer is something Iím not used to, because ryes generally seem more bitter to me. The floral notes with the sweetness and, really, light rye makes this a super tasty beer. The rye doesnít come out very strong, but a good beerís a good beer.

Transferring from beer advocate. A decent rye beer from Bells. Nothing too rememberable.

Bottle, Pours hazy butterscotch, medium off-white creamy head, nice lacing. Aroma is caramel, citrus, pine, butterscotch. Flavor is light sweet, slightly bitter, with just a touch of rye spiciness. Medium body, bitterness coming on on the finish. Interesting for what it is.

Bottle: † Orangish straw, hazy, moderate to large foamy white head, nice lacing. † Citrus peel and pith on the nose, faint rye and rustic floral notes. † Wheaty like ryeness on the tongue. † Faint resin. † Moderate to full body and mouthfeel. † Big wheaty exit, rye, with some resin, pith, and citrus peel. † Not quite as bright as other Pales, and more wheaty, more rye, but fairly entertaining and tasty!

Rated on 3-08-2013 at 800 Degree Three Fires-Fort Wayne, IN) This draft beer pours a medium sized white head with short retention, mostly transparent/slightly hazy body, spotty amounts of lacing, slow rising carbonation, and the body hue is pale yellow. The Aroma is that of malt, rye, herbal, citrus, grapefruit, and earthy. The Taste is bitter, malty, rye, earthy, and citrus hops. The Palate is slightly tingly and this beer is medium bodied. This beer has a lingering hoppy bitterness, is worth trying, but it is a little bit too hoppy tasting for my liking.
