Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

This is a really well done American pale ale that happens to be brewed with rye. It’s rather cloudy and orange in color. The head is pretty small but it does at least leave behind a good amount of lace. The focus is on grapefruit-like hops in the nose and in the flavor as well. Normally, I like for hops to be bright and vibrant but these are more subtle and earthy and it really works quite well. It is definitely not outside the standard realm of an American pale ale but it is something a little different and I like it.

Bottle from Save On. Clear golden with dense lasting white head and lace. Citrus and herbal perfumy aroma. Dry with hints of nuts biscuit and apricot. With dry herbal citrus grassy woody resinous finish. Light body, smooth effervescent. Very good.

Draft. Pours clear light amber. Medium creamy tan head. Hoppy, fruity, sweet. Citrus. Orange. Touch of grapefruit. Great rye character. Toasty beneath. Malt to balance. Full to medium creamy body. Moderate bitterness. Perfect rye spiciness. Solid Sweetness to balance. Great balance. Just a good beer. Well made. Very drinkable. I really enjoyed this..

On tap at Fraser's. Courtesy of Erica! The pour is a a foggy amberish gold with a nice filmy head and gorgeous lace. The aroma it a little bready, backed up with a nice hop punch, and a light bitterness that rounds out nicely on the nose. The flavor is solid. It's got a bitterness that tends to move to a sweet note, but comes back, with a flow through. The mouth feel is decently thin, but creamy at one point with a lovely lingering aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

@ Drake’s / Florence KY Clear medium amber with a 1" head that slowly drops; curtains of lace. Taste is sweet malt with an edge that adds citrus hops early in the palate. A little malt creeps in again in the finish. Not a lot happening here, but it is easy to drink. Good food beer, light enough to session.

Don’t think I am smitten by this one. Bells is one of my favorite brewery’s and while this is not a bad beer this is the one variety that they carry that I can’t see myself making a repeat purchase. Very rare for them. Tastes like a slightly watered down Midwestern pale ale with a dash of hops. A rare "miss" for the boys from Bells.

A light beer with a medium color. Starts with a bitter taste but finishes smoothly. Not bad.

12 oz bottle as a gift from Joe --- thanks! Immediate dryness and a parching effect on the mouth and tongue. Tastes of lemonade and cactus. i liked it despite the tartness.

This pours a clear, light yellow color with a slight carbonated head. The aroma is full of rye and grain scents. The taste is full of rye and has a dry finish. There are lots of earthy tones that make this a fairly easy drinking beer. Interesting and very well made.

Golden color with a white foam head. Has a very light citrus aroma. Taste is mild hops and mild sweetness. Everything about the beer is mild. Not bad, but nothing really stands out.
