COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

12 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden honey with a medium sized off white head. Aroma of earthy notes, hops, citrus , bread malts and light funk. Taste is much the same as the aroma.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Wegmans Leesburg. It pours a slightly hazy dark orange color with a medium foamy white head. The nose hazy some spicy rye notes, but the primary smell seems to be a little wet dog and wet paper. A little oxidized perhaps? Thankfully it seems to blow off after a bit. The flavor has a light grassy bitterness, a touch of rye, spice, and light floral notes. Medium to full mouthfeel with carbonation on the softer side and a lingering bitterness. Not too bad. Definitely a different take on a pale ale.

The aroma is a bit dry with some floral citrus and rye notes. The appearance golden with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma a bit soapy. The palate is average. Overall not bad but not a favorite.

Has a nice light malty first sip then it hits with a nice punch of astringent. Very floral with a dry rye taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

maekchu (1943) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 10, 2013
Bottle from Five Points Bottle Shop (Atlanta Highway) in Athens. Moderate stinky, earthy hop, some frog pond. Very pale straw, a bit hazy, with a 2-cm head. Pepper right from the start / in mid, pepper notes blend well with the hops / finished with bittering tracks and tiny pepper bites. Medium body. Not overdone with the rye. Good, more or less one-dimensional, session stuff.

Draft at dodge city. Hoppy, but smooth feel. Smells of hops and citrus. Clear amber with very low head.

Tap. Clear, dark gold with average, creamy white head. Aroma is rye, crawl and biscuit malts, light fruit, and grassy hops. Flavor is chewy, bready malts and grassy/pine hops forward with supporting light fruit esters; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

12 oz. bottle from Kyle. Thanks man! It pours a light golden color with a lasting ring of white foam. Pretty light for a rye beer. The aroma is nice with cereal grains, pine, hints of dense rye maltiness and some citrus. The flavor is full bodied and very bitter with citrus pith, good rye bread crust, pine, and an earthy bitter finish. Smooth on the palate and dry with multigrain maltiness rather than sweet cara malts. A bit of a punishing finish for a lighter pale, but overall very enjoyable.
