COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Cafť. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

Alright, Iíll say this... Iím favoring rye in my whiskeys and beers - my bias being presented, this is a fine amber-hued brew with a lasting, finely bubbled head and a delightful finish. Some more, please!

12 oz bottle pours a cloudy but bright orange color with lots of floating yeast, a small white head, and attractive lacing. Aroma is full of orange peel, spices, rye, and some earthy grass. Taste is moderately sweet alternating with slightly bitter. Body is medium with lively carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. This reminds me of an IPA with rye. Itís easily drinkable and refreshing, but not one of the great ones from Bells.

Pours bright yellowish orange with a white one finger head. Lotd of sediment in here, so pour foul on my part I guess. Aroma is orange citrus, spicy rye, and a bit if wheaty yeast funk. Light orange rind flavor finishes with some hint of rye spice. Seems very much a summer ale. Not a bad beer, and a neat twist on the rye beer style. Almost a combo of Oberon and Ruthless Rye.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2013 Bottle and draft. Clear golden body. Frothy white head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of raw grain, rye, sulfur, vegetable. Hint of bread. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Bitterness lingers into the finish. Lots of raw grain and raw hop taste. Updated: Draft version is cleaner, crisper.

Reviewed 2/25/13. Thanks to Momar42 for the 12 oz bottle! Poured into a nonic pint glass. A: Pours a golden orange color with a ton of yeast particles floating around. The head is a two finger white shade. Both texturing and retention are pretty damn good, and the lacing left by the receding head is quite attractive as well. Pretty face, ugly body, letís split the difference here. S: I do notice a bit of rye to it, along side some piny, herbal hops. The hop profile seems to fit the rye malt quite well. It becomes a bit maltier as it warms up, and grows a biscuity component as well. Aromatically, it could be a little less muted. T: One thing that lets me down right from the onset is the lack of distinctive character to it. It starts and finishes with a combination of earthy, spicy malts and piny hops. After a while, the finish will develop a grassy hop quality to it that I enjoy somewhat. This really is the type of beer more conducive to simple drinking than actual reviewing... M: Rougher than I like, which is exasperated by the coarse yet strong carbonation and fuller body. The back end is quite clean and crisp; so maybe this would be good in the summer time? O: Not bad - but Iím certainly not smitten with it. Itís too sharp in feel for its nondescript flavor profile.

I love this rye, citrus, rye!?, dry, hoppy. Citrus in both taste and smell. Delicious.

Golden coloured body, slightly hazy with a thinnish, one centimetre tall white head. Aroma of pale malt, light hops, some citrus and a bit of honey. Light-bodied; Strong rye and malt flavours with a little sweetness, some mild bitterness from hops and a bit of herbal flavours with a hint of sweetness. Aftertaste shows light grain, a bit of yeast, some faint hops and mostly mild yet flavourful rye. Overall, a nice beer that shows some good characteristics while remaining mild - definitely worth a sample during Spring if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Grateful Red in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 02-February-2013 for US$2.37 sampled at home in Washington on 10-March-2013.

Sometimes I think there should be a "Sound" rating, too. Does the little "Pssht!" when opening a bottle put you in the right mood? Anyway:
Color is just a tad darker than the average Golden Ale. Thereís a bit of oxidation as I pour. But then a pleasant lightly malty beer smell. Poured gently into the Sam Adams glass, thereís a thick bit of head just before the top flare. And I can better see the murky bits of Bellís traditionally unfiltered "floaties." Taste is more of an APA than the "Golden Ale" the label says. Still, itís big and hoppy. Not resiny enough to be called a little brother to a Hopslam, but more bitter with a note of pine. Not a bad idea to have a lighter in alcohol but still hopalicious ale in the arsenal.

It poured a clear golden/orange color with a small white head. The aroma was of citrus, earthiness and spicy hops. The taste was of lemon, orange citrus, pine, spicy hops and grains. It finished with a medium bitterness and a little juiciness. Good stuff.
