COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

Despite freindly filtered pale lager look with things floating in there and a nifty fragrent aroma, taste is big bitter ipa with a little wallop on the finish. Lager lovers will not be impressed by its over the top juicy pine needles and spruce tar mixed with green grapefruit rinds.

Pours a cloudy gold with a medium white head. Aroma is pilsner malts and light grains. Taste really is good. Initially, you get the grains which fade almost immediately, giving way to a citrus rind hoppy bitterness. The finish is pilsner malts with a little maple syrup. Not bad and easy to drink.

Resin and floral hop aroma. Distinct rye flavor mixed with a pilsner type malt. Hop bitterness resembles the rye malt, but lingers in the mouth. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at mellow mushroom. Pour is golden and light. Med carbonation. Nose is dry with fruit sweetness. Mild hop taste upfront and some rye to follow. Mellow beer and good. ---Rated via my mouth

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy honey golden color. Nice 2 finger head which leaves some wrings of lacing. Aroma is light citrus, grassy hops, and spicy rye. Flavor is bitter rye, grassy hops, and some citrus notes. Flavor is fairly light with a nice light bitter citrus hop finish. Really liking this!

Bottle. Pours clear dark gold with a large, creamy off-white head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is spicy and earthy rye malt with Pils malt notes, pear and apple fruity esters, pine and citrus hops. Flavor is moderate hops and bitterness with spicy and earthy rye malt backbone, light fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Appearance:golden-orange, with a scant, soapy white head and a million floaties in suspension. Aroma: honey-lemon cough drops, poppyseed bread, apricot, and candied orange peel. Taste: grapefruit and blood-orange bitterness, with a light, crackery malt undertone. Finish: dry, citrusy bitterness, with a barest hint of toasty rye malt. Notes: Frankly, was hoping for more. Appearance was unappetizing, and whatever rye there is in this beer is woefully understated. Would have benefited from more malt balance against the citrus-heavy hops, where the rye spice really could come out to play. The aroma was really nice, though.

Nickls (1978) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - MAR 3, 2013
Tap. Thin white head, hazy darker golden yellow. Light rye, slight citrus and Bells house yeast aromas. Touch grassy and minerally, the rye is faint, dry enough. Lighter to medium body with tight carbonation. Easy drinking but nothing terribly interesting.
